Hemp seeds: Is it a nutritional miracle or much ado about nothing?

Cannabis supplements are experiencing an incredible boom lately. You won't find a supplement shop that doesn't offer CBD oil, hemp protein, hemp seeds or other hemp products. However, once a similar wave of enthusiasm for a certain type of product rises, we tend to turn our eyes off the real facts and blindly believe almost everything the manufacturer tells us. That's why today we've decided to take a look at hemp seeds and their actual use in the diet. Are they really as amazing as they say, or is it just another of many ways to extract money from gullible customers? Find out in today's article.

Where do hemp seeds come from?

Hemp needs no introduction. This plant is associated with countless positive effects on human health, but it is also used as a drug that is banned in our country. However, hemp seeds do not contain any THC or other cannabinoids, so they do not have any psychotropic effects either. Their sale and consumption is therefore, as in the case of CBD oils and drops, perfectly legal. Although the popularity of hemp seeds in this country has only started to grow in recent years, it is not really a new thing. Traditional Chinese medicine has used them, along with many other medicinal substances, since ancient times.

Hemp seeds have excellent nutritional values

Hemp seeds contain a large number of health benefits. Their protein content is particularly high, with just under 10 grams in three tablespoons. Hemp seeds also contain all 9 essential amino acids in the ideal ratio. However, there is also fibre, vitamins (especially B, C and D) and minerals, especially phosphorus, magnesium and zinc. The high content of unsaturated fatty acids is also a big plus. They are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for the health of the human body. At the same time, they also contain omega 6 fatty acids in such quantities that the resulting ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 is about 3:1, which is the ideal level to aim for in our diet.

Do they have any positive effects on health?

Several studies have been conducted on hemp seeds to investigate their positive effects on human health. However, it has to be said that there are not enough studies to conclusively prove any positive effects, so it is still speculation. However, the most common claims are about the ability of hemp seeds to prevent chronic venous disease and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and so on. In addition, they can promote heart health, have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, improve skin quality and effectively combat rheumatoid arthritis. A large number of other positive effects are also reported, but these should be taken with a grain of salt. Hemp seeds can supplement a lot of micronutrients that are otherwise under-represented in our diets, and thus can help you with many things. But definitely don't expect miracles from them.

How to enjoy them in the best possible way?

If you decide to try hemp seeds, how do you actually prepare them? Of course, the easiest option is to just eat them. But you might get tired of crunching the seeds themselves after a short while, so it's a good idea to have a few other ideas in reserve. You can add them to yogurts, various porridges or smoothies and soups. If you like to bake, you can add hemp seeds to homemade biscuits or any other baked goods. Remember, however, that unlike most other seeds, hemp seeds have a rather strong taste.

A useful addition to the kitchen

Hemp seeds have great nutritional values, making them a good addition to any athlete's diet. In truth, however, it is not worth looking for miracles in them. They do contain plenty of minerals, vitamins, fibre, protein and much more, but remember that they are still just seeds. You'd have to eat a bowl full of them to take in any significant amount. While there are many health benefits associated with hemp seeds, these need to be takenas we have to wait for a large number of scientific studies on this issue. Ultimately, then, I would summarise it as follows: hemp seeds are a great addition to the kitchen, which can be used to improve some dishes.but it is definitely not a miracle food that will save your diet.
