Yerba mate: a great choice when you need a good dose of caffeine

The South American drink Yerba mate has literally conquered the world over the last few years and its popularity is constantly growing. What is Yerba mate?

Yerba maté (often referred to as maté) is a decoction made from the dried leaves of the Paraguayan holly tree. is widespread in South America and is even the national drink of Argentina. It is particularly popular for its health and stimulant properties, for which it has been traditionally consumed for centuries.

The Paraguayan holly (Ilex paraguariensis) is a tree that grows naturally in Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay. It grows to a height of around 20 metres and has serrated, ovate leaves. Its fruit is a berry similar to our rowan.

The name maté is then derived from the Quechua word mati, which literally means decoction or tea. Yerba is then the Spanish word for herb. Literally translated, you would simply get 'herbal tea'. However, this would be very inaccurate as it is not tea as such.

What does Yerba Maté contain?

The leaves of the Paraguayan holly plant contain a hefty dose of caffeine, which is a natural stimulant that helpshelps delay fatigue, increases blood pressure or improves the use of fat reserves, for example. In addition, they are very rich in minerals such as magnesium, calcium, iron, etc. or a wide range of vitamins (A, B, C, E, beta-carotene) and antioxidants.

Effects of maté

It will come as no surprise to you that maté is particularly sought after for its energising effects. The large amount of caffeine makes it a popular alternative, especially for those who don't like coffee or find it irritating. However, it should be noted here that maté generally contains less caffeine than high-quality arabica. It does, however, contain more vitamins.

Studies also suggest that maté helps with weight loss, but this could probably also be attributed to the caffeine. The phenols in maté may also provide support for the cardiovascular system, regulate blood sugar, giveaid weight loss and are also thought to kill cancer cells. However, research on this topic is still in its infancy and will need to be completed. There is also talk of its anti-inflammatory effects, but studies are not yet conclusive.

Maté has also been shown to improve performance during training, which may make it appear more natural option for those who don't like any of our comparisons of the best pre-workouts. However, we recommend not mixing these products with each other, as excess caffeine can cause impaired concentration, insomnia, nausea or headaches.

Who is maté good for?

Maté is suitable for anyone who needs a good dose ofIf they need a good dose of caffeine but, for example, don't feel sick to their stomach or simply don't like coffee. It also tastes less bitter than green tea, for example. At the same time, it contains a large number of health benefits that will be appreciated not only by athletes and all active people. However, it is not suitable for pregnant women or young children who are very sensitive to caffeine.

How is maté prepared?

Preparation is very important for maté. If it is not prepared correctly, its effects may be reduced. To do this correctly, first put a teaspoon of maté in a cup and pour a little cold water over it to soak up the leaves. Then bring about 250 ml of water to the boil. Allow this to cool to about 80 degrees and pour it over the leaves. The mate will infuse for approximately 5 minutes.

It is not advisable to pour hot water over the holly leaves, as the taste of the resulting product will change and its effects will be weaker. Do not be afraid to experiment and feel free to add fruit or other herbs, such as mint or lemon balm, to the maté.

When to drink maté?

It is ideal to enjoy your maté in the morning or after lunch at the latest. Because of its high caffeine content, definitely do not take it at night. You could experience insomnia or less quality sleep.
