Which omega 3 to choose?

As you've probably noticed, there is a plethora of omega 3 supplements on the market and it can be really challenging to find your way around.

From my own experience, I recommend taking Opti Omega 3, which in mythe best quality you can find on the market today. At the same time, they also offer a great price/quality ratio, which is why they take the top spot in our comparison.

If you're worried about them being liquid, Reflex Nutrition's Omega 3s are also a good alternative, as they have a high ratio of EPA and DHA compared to the competition.

A third good option may be Pure Omega 3 from Prom-IN, which offer ideal value for money. And of course, you can also choose supplements that are not in our ranking at all. Just keep in mind that it is not advisable to choose the cheapest supplements and that the EPA and DHA content is not at all the key factor to decide on.

Why don't we recommend a combination of omega 3 and 6?

At first glance, it might seem better to choose supplements combining omega 3 and omega 6 (ideally omega 9). But this is quite a fundamental misconception, because it is the ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 fatty acids that makes the most important difference in overall health and disease prevention. And although the ideal ratio is roughly 1:4, expert evidence suggests that today's central European diet is a shocking 1:15 in favour of omega 6. Our aim, therefore, is certainly not to increase the total intake of both (or all three) fatty acids, but to improve the ratio between them.

When to take omega 3?

From my own experience, I recommend taking omega 3 fatty acids in two doses. I recommend taking the first dose after waking up and the second dose after training, each time with a meal rich in protein and carbohydrates. The reason is simple, omega 3s help optimize the hormonal processes taking place in the body as they increaseanabolic sensitivity of cells to amino acid intake, but this effect occurs primarily when given with carbohydrates. For this reason, I tend to dose 1-2 capsules with breakfast and the same dose with a post-workout meal. However, if you don't want to take fatty acids twice a day, one dose is plenty sufficient - personally, I would prefer the one with a post-workout meal.

They're not omega 3 like omega 3...

We would like to dedicate the following paragraph mainly to those of you who have products in ourour comparison (despite their quality) and who want to choose a completely different product. I have already outlined earlier that the EPA and DHA content is by no means the main factor determining the quality of a supplement. Why not? Because this content can be artificially increased by various processes which, on the contrary, eliminate the presence of some other substances beneficial to health. For this reason, it is always a good idea to choose supplements with a natural content of these two fatty acids. The ratio between EPA and DHA is roughly 1.8:1.2.

Another factor that influences the quality of the resulting supplement is the origin of the fish and its susceptibility to heavy metal accumulation. Large marine fish often tend to stretch arsenic as far as mercury that polluted the ocean, in contrast freshwater fish are considered the cleanest. And we could go on and on like this. If you want to choose another supplement that we don't mention here, be sure to only buy products from companiesthat you trust, and study the ingredients and the origin of the fish thoroughly before you buy.

What to look out for when choosing?

In addition to artificially increasing the active ingredients, the origin of the fish and the possible content of theIt is also worth paying attention to the shelf life when buying omega-3 fatty acids. This applies particularly to liquid products that need to be stored in the fridge. For such products, it is also worth considering the size of the packaging. If it contains too many daily doses, it may be difficult to consume the entire contents before the expiry date. Last but not least, remember that it is not good to be influenced by tempting advertising and clever marketing, but that you need toto always think about the ingredients and the real facts about the effect of each substance. Not everything that looks great on paper is actually of good quality. So again, I recommend sticking to proven brands that you have confidence in.

Which omega 3 to choose?

There are several factors to consider when choosing omega 3 fatty acids. The first is, of course, quality. We will come to this issue in the following paragraphs, so for now I would like to focus on other important factors. One of these is the form of the supplement in question. Omega 3 is sold in capsule form, but it is also possible to find it in liquid form or even in cod liver oil. Each form has its pros and cons and therefore it is impossible to say unequivocally which is the best. The undoubted advantage of liquid supplements with omega 3 fatty acids is the high content of active ingredients. In contrast, supplements in capsule form have the advantage that they do not taste bad and are often more convenient to take. Instead of taking the liquid by the spoonful, you simply wash down a few capsules with water and you're done. In addition, some supplements have to be stored in the fridge, which also complicates things unnecessarily. In addition, liquid supplements are more challenging to transport because they are at greater risk of spillage, which is especially true for oil.

In addition to the usual omega 3 fatty acids, you can also find so-called krill oil today. Instead of fish, this is made from crustaceans that live on the floor of the Antarctic Ocean. As a result, it does not contain the toxins and heavy metals that are often found in fish. Because it comes from a much cleaner environment, the effect of krill oil is also much more pronounced.
