Detailed analysis of the best potassium

1. NOW Potassium Citrate Pure Powder

NOW Potassium Citrate Pure Powder

In our comparison of the best potassium supplements, Potassium Citrate Pure Powder from NOW (formerly NOW Foods) performed the best. The biggest advantage of this product is its form - it is also a powder. While most competing products are sold in capsule form, NOW Potassium Citrate Pure Powder takes a different route and definitely benefits from it.

Benefits:

  • Pure formula with no unnecessary additives
  • High dose of active ingredient
  • Low price
  • One pack lasts you about 8 months

Disadvantages:

  • Some people may not like the taste

About the manufacturer:
The roots of the American company NOW (formerly known as Now Foods) go back to 1968. Since then, the company has been trying to help people lead a healthy lifestyle through its products. In all of its products, the emphasis is first and foremost on high quality and reliable ingredients In addition to supplements dietary supplements, the company also produces products such as cosmetics, health food and pet food. You may have already come across NOW products in our comparison of the best K vitamins or in our ranking of the best magnesium supplements.

In one serving (1.4 grams) you will find:

  • 1,400 mg of potassium citrate
    • of which 448 mg of elemental potassium

As I wrote above, NOW Potassium Citrate Pure Powder benefits greatly from its form. Powder supplements don't need any capsules, so there is no need to add any additional substances to them. At the same time, it is much easier to take more of the active ingredient in one dose. The last advantage is also a lower price, which is again related to the pure composition. As a result, it is therefore no wonder that this product performs so well compared to the competition. We can find potassium in the form of citrate, which is clearly the best option. In terms of the active substance content, there is also nothing to complain about.

Final assessment:
Supplements boasting a quality composition often come out to a higher amount than other products. In this case, however, nothing like that happens. A single dose of potassium from NOW comes out the cheapest of all the products in the ranking, which is a huge plus. To make matters worse, one pack will last you a long 243 days. The combination of excellent price and perfect formulation makes this product a clear favorite for pretty much everyone. However, if we had to complain about something, it would be the absence of magnesium, which together with potassium works great and can be found in some products. Ultimately, though, this is still a top-notch product that is worth trying.

2. MyoTec Potassium Citrate

MyoTec Potassium Citrate

Potassium Citrate from MyoTec is characterized by its very high content of the active ingredient. It is therefore not surprising that it ranked very well in our comparison. As in the case of the previous product, it is potassium in powder form, which brings with it many advantages.

Advantages:

  • Very high content of the active substance
  • Low price
  • Composition without any additives
  • Excellent value for money

Disadvantages:

  • Does not contain magnesium

About the manufacturer:
The MyoTec brand has been in the sports nutrition market for over a decade. The company is distinguished by the fact that it uses only pure and high quality It avoids artificial sweeteners and similar additives. The target group of the MyoTec brand is athletes with high demands on their bodies who profess a healthy lifestyle. You may have already come across this manufacturer in our ranking of the best nootropics.

In one dose (2 grams) you will find:

  • 2 grams of potassium citrate
    • of which 716 mg of elemental potassium

The content of more than 700 mg of elemental potassium in one dose is unprecedented compared to the competition. Combined with normal eating habits, this means a seamless replenishment of sufficient potassium into your system. As I wrote above, the biggest advantage of the product is the powder form. Again, there are no additives that are needed in capsules, for example. The product is also suitable for vegans, which is undoubtedly also a great advantage.

Final evaluation:
The similarity between the potassium from MyoTec and the competing product from NOW is great. It cannot go unnoticed that both products offer premium quality at an absolutely minimal price, making them the obvious choice for basically everyone. The slight downside to MyoTec Potassium Citrate, however, is the price, which is a small fraction higher. Even so, compared to other products, it is a completely minimal price and the resulting price-quality ratio is absolutely perfect. So if you are looking for quality potassium at a low price, you won't go wrong with this product either.

3. BrainMax Draslík Magnesium

BrainMax Draslík Magnesium

BrainMax Potassium Magnesium also gets a very good rating from us. As is evident from the name of this product, it contains magnesium in addition to potassium itself. These two minerals work synergistically together so that they enhance each other's effects. In terms of composition, it is therefore a top-notch product, but you will have to pay a little extra for it.

Benefits:

  • Quality and sophisticated composition
  • Magnesium content in the form of malate
  • Easy dosing
  • Suitable for vegans

Disadvantages:

  • Slightly higher price

About the Manufacturer:
The Czech brand BrainMax was created to bring dietary supplements to the market based on a combination of the latest scientific knowledge and the natural power of nature. The company's repertoire consists mainly of products supporting brain activities, but you can also find classic supplements needed for strength sports. At MyFitnessio you could meet the BrainMax brand, for example, in the ranking of the best kicksbut we've also shared our impressions with you in a comparison of the best CBD drops and oils.

In one capsule you will find (a daily dose is 1 to 2 capsules):

  • 100 mg of elemental potassium (in the form of potassium citrate)
  • 100 mg of elemental magnesium (in the form of malate)

The combination of potassium and magnesium works well because the two minerals work synergistically. Thanks to their combined use, better information transfer occurs between cells, the body manages curcs better and physical performance is also enhanced. The form of magnesium must also be appreciated, as malate is one of the best utilized forms on the market. In terms of dosage, the manufacturer recommends taking one to two capsules per day. However, due to the potassium content of one capsule, I find it preferable to dose two capsules in most cases. However, if you are taking the product for the first time, start with one capsule and increase the amount subsequently.

Final assessment:
BrainMax Potassium Magnesium is especially suitable for those athletes who do not supplement magnesium in other ways. If you are taking a separate supplement containing magnesium, it is essentially pointless to pay extra for it here as well. On the other hand, if you need to supplement both minerals, you can kill two birds with one stone with this product. It is clear that due to the content of a high quality form of magnesium, BrainMax potassium comes out slightly more expensive than previous products in terms of price. However, the value for money is still excellent and this is definitely a supplement worth investing in.

4. Titánus Draslík & Hořčík

Titánus Draslík & Hořčík

The potassium-magnesium combination is also the focus of the Titanus brand. In this case, however, the customer has to pay extra because Potassium & Magnesiumk from Titánus is one of the most expensive products in the ranking. In terms of quality, however, it is hard to criticize anything about it.

Pros:

  • Hilarious formulation
  • Combination of potassium with a highly bioavailable form of magnesium
  • Easy dosing
  • Ideal form of potassium

Disadvantages:

  • High price

About the Manufacturer:
The Titanus brand has been known in the sports nutrition market since 2014. From the very beginning, its goal has been to provide athletes with a range that completely covers their needs. It helped the company a lot when it teamed up with the then still almost unknown Ales Lamka, who is the face of the Titánus brand. Sports accessories from Titánus are nothing new to us. You may have already come across them in our comparison of the best pre-workouts or in our ranking of the best whey isolates.

In one capsule you will find (a daily dose is 3 to 5 capsules):

  • 110 mg of potassium citrate
  • 28 mg magnesium bisglycinate

As mentioned several times, the combination of potassium with magnesium provides many benefits. An understandable condition is the use of a well bioavailable form of both minerals. In terms of potassium, you will always encounter citrate in quality supplements, which is the best possible choice. Conversely, for magnesium, it is very common to use less suitable forms, which are often found in products that one would expect to be of good quality. Fortunately, in this case we find magnesium bisglycinate, which belongs to among the best possible choices and is particularly suitable for evening use.

Final assessment:
The biggest negative of potassium from the brand Titanus is undoubtedly the high price. One daily dose comes out to several times the price of most competitors. It should be noted, however, that if you decide to take 5 capsules instead of 3 (the manufacturer recommends giving3 to 5 capsules per day), the final price will climb even higher. Personally, I do not think it is necessary to increase the dose in this way. Of course, it all depends on how much potassium you take in your regular diet.

5. Swanson Potassium Citrate

Swanson Potassium Citrate

A quality option at a low price may be Potassium Citrate from Swanson. This is one of the cheapest products in the ranking, which does not contain potassiumk in staggering quantities, but it's enough for preventive supplementation.

Benefits:

  • Very low price
  • Easy dosing
  • One pack lasts for about 4 months

Disadvantages:

  • Relatively low active ingredient content

About the manufacturer:
Swanson Health Products began its operations in 1969 in the United States. The reason the company was founded was to introduce products that would help people achieve a healthy lifestyle. In 2018, the company was rebranded and has since then simply called itself Swanson. However, it is not a classic supplement manufacturer. In fact, it also offers pet food or herbs. We've shared our experiences with the Swanson brand in our comparison of the best probiotics or in our ranking of the best vitamin K supplements.

In one serving (1 capsule) you will find:

  • 99 mg of elemental potassium (in the form of potassium citrate)

At first glance, the dose contained in one capsule of Swanson Potassium Citrate is smaller than most other products. Of course, you are not limited by what the manufacturer says when taking it, although it is advisable to follow its instructions. Of course, with an increase in dose goes hand in hand with an increased price. Even at a dosage of two or three capsules a day, however, one daily dose would still come out to a very affordable price. This is also an option, however, if you are only concerned with prevention and you know that in the normal course ofyou take enough potassium in your normal diet, you can probably get by with one capsule.

Final assessment:
Potassium Citrate by Swanson is a successful product in which you will not find any potentially harmful substances. The big positive is, of course, the price, while as a negative we could point to the relatively low content of the active substance. However, given that even after increasing the dose to 2 or 3 capsules, which equates in terms of potassium intake competition, one daily dose comes out cheap enough, I don't really see a problem in this respect. As a result, I can highly recommend this supplement.

6. NOW Potassium Citrate

NOW Potassium Citrate

The second representative of the NOW brand also found its place in our ranking. However, the product with the simple name Potassium Citrate is produced in the form of capsules. Its composition is quite similar to the previous supplement, but the manufacturer recommends a slightly different dosage in this case.

Benefits:

  • Ideal amount of the active ingredient
  • Suitable also for vegans
  • Good value for money

Disadvantages:

  • Slightly higher price

In one capsule you will find (a daily dose is 1 to 5 capsules):

  • 99 mg of elemental potassium (in the form of potassium citrate)

As written above, NOW Potassium Citrate is quite similar in composition to Swanson's potassium. Both products contain the same amount of potassium per capsule, but each manufacturer specifies a different dosage. NOW recommends taking one to five capsules each day. Since most competitors contain about 300 mg of potassium per dose, we based the price per day on this value as well. Therefore, it is generally recommended to take 3 capsules per day and then adjust the dosage to individual needs.

Final evaluation:
If you are deciding between Swanson's potassium or this product from NOW, there are only a few differences you should consider. The former comes out slightly better in price per capsule, but on the other hand NOW Potassium Citrate is also suitable for vegans as it does not contain gelatin. Otherwise, however, they are basically identical products (with different recommended dosage, of course).

7. Jarrow Formulas Potassium Citrate

Jarrow Formulas Potassium Citrate

Jarrow Formulas' potassium also offers quality performance at a low price. Again, one daily dose comes out to a very affordable amount, which is of course a big plus and for many people even decisive when choosing a supplement.

Benefits:

  • Very low price
  • Easy dosing
  • Does not contain any harmful and controversial substances

Disadvantages:

  • Lower active ingredient content

About the manufacturer:
The American company Jarrow Formulas claims to be more than just a typical vitamin manufacturer. This manufacturer has been in the sports nutrition market since 1977. The company has come a long way since then. Jarrow L. Rogovin, the company's founder, hasn't been personally delivering orders to customers' doors for a long time. Today, Jarrow Formulas is one of the renowned manufacturers of sports supplements and during its time in the market, this brand has earned many awards. You may have already come across it in our comparison of the best vitamin K supplements.

In one dose (1 capsule) you will find:

  • 99 mg of elemental potassium (in the form of potassium citrate)

In terms of composition, Jarrow's potassium is strikingly similar to the previous two products. Since the manufacturer recommends a dosage of one capsule per day, the active ingredient content of and the possibility of adjusting the dosage, the same is written for Swanson Potassium Citrate. However, it is worth saying that Jarrow Formulas capsules contain a little more stabilisers and similarHowever, in neither case are there any potentially harmful substances.

Final assessment:
Jarrow Formulas' potassium is indeed similar in many ways to the previous two products. However, the slightly higher price and, in theory, the presence of more additives play to its disadvantage. Again, however, it should be mentioned that these are substances that are found in similar capsules quite commonly and are completely harmless. Ultimately, therefore, this is a supplement that will not disappoint you.

8. Viridian Potassium Magnesium Citrate

Viridian Potassium Magnesium Citrate

The more demanding of you will probably be more interested in Potassium Magnesium Citrate from Viridian. It combines a proven pair of minerals in a very bioavailable form. In terms of the quality of the composition, this is a first-class product, but it is definitely not the ideal choice for everyone. As is usual with Viridian products, you will have to pay a lot more for it.

Pros:

  • Thoughtful formulation
  • Combination of potassium citrate and magnesium citrate
  • No harmful additives or allergens

Disadvantages:

  • Very high price

About the Manufacturer:
The British company Viridian Nutrition specializes in the production of so-called ethical vitamins. All of this manufacturer's products are 100% bioactive and do not contain genetically engineered substances. In addition, they are kept in capsules of plant origin without the use of any additives. The company prides itself on the purity of its products, environmental friendliness and helping charity. You may have already come across the Viridian brand in our ranking of the best antioxidants or in our comparison of the best digestive enzymes.

In one capsule you will find (a daily dose is 1 to 3 capsules):

  • 99 mg of potassium (in the form of potassium citrate)
  • 50 mg of magnesium (in the form of magnesium citrate)
  • 30 mg of alfalfa
  • 10 mg spirulina
  • 10 mg blueberry

All Viridian capsules are natural and are based on alfalfa, spirulina and bilberry. As you can see from the list of ingredients, this time is no different. We must especially appreciate the presence of magnesium and its chosen form. Citrate is one of the most bioavailable forms of magnesium on the market (along with bisglycinate and malate, which can be found in competing products). However, in terms of potassium content, it is not a miracle and it is therefore advisable to try to stick to the upper recommended dosage, but this has a negative impact on the already high price.

Final assessment:
If you are looking for a quality potassium supplement, Viridian Potassium Magnesium Citrate will definitely not disappoint you. However, you need to be prepared to actually pay extra for it. This is the most expensive product in the entire ranking (per daily dose). On the other hand, it offers many benefits that will win it fans anyway.

9. NutriWorks Potassium 300mg

NutriWorks Potassium 300mg

A decent price/quality ratio is offered by potassium from NutriWorks. In addition, one pack of this product will last you up to 4 months if the recommended dosage is followed, which is a huge plus. However, it must be said that otherwise this supplement does not particularly surpass its competitors.

Advantages:

  • Good value for money
  • Ideal amount of potassium in one capsule
  • Easy dosing

Disadvantages:

  • Not much to impress compared to the competition

About the manufacturer:
NutriWorks is a company originating from Finland that was founded in 2009. Its products are divided into two categories, which you can tell apart simply by their color. The white range is characterized by its purity and the absence of any artificial sweeteners, while the white range is characterized by its purity and the absence of any artificial sweeteners.mco products in the black range do contain similar substances, but only in minimal quantities. The NutriWorks brand prides itself on the honesty and premium quality of its products. You can see it in our comparison of the best l-carnitine products.

In one serving (1 capsule) you will find:

  • 300 mg of potassium in the form of potassium citrate

NutriWorks Potassium is also a product suitable for vegans. This is because the capsule is made of plant-based materials, which is undoubtedly appreciated by a large number of people nowadays. The product cannot be faulted in terms of composition or quality. Potassium is found in ideal quantities and of course it is never a problem to adjust the dosage.

Final evaluation:
In terms of quality, NutriWorks Potassium is without question one of the top-quality products. However, the problem I see is that it fails to differentiate itself from the competition in any positive way. In terms of price, it is not a blockbuster, but it is not a disaster either. The same can be said about the composition. Therefore, I can definitely recommend the product as a whole, but I don't really know why anyone would prefer it over supplements from the top of the rankings.

10. Webber Naturals Potassium Citrate

Webber Naturals Potassium Citrate

Our ranking is rounded off by Potassium Citrate from Webber Naturals. It won us over mainly because of its low price, but we have to criticize it, like several other products, for its low active ingredient content.

Pros:

  • Low price
  • Absence of harmful additives
  • High-quality composition

Disadvantages:

  • Low active ingredient content

About the manufacturer:
The Webber Naturals brand is definitely not one of the most widely used manufacturers in this country, but it has been producing dietary supplements in North America for over 50 years. The company prides itself on making its products from plants and herbs that it gently grows itself on its farms in Canada. It strictly avoids the use of harmful or controversial additives and, of course, prides itself primarily on the quality of its products

In one serving (1 tablet) you will find:

  • 99 mg of potassium citrate

In terms of the content of the active ingredient, this is certainly no mean feat in this case. But as I've written about with several previous products, you can always adjust the dosage to suit you. In such a situation, however, you need to take into account that the final price per daily dose will also rise, which is understandably unpleasant. When following the recommended dosage, one packet of Webber Naturals Potassium Citrate can last you for 90 days, which is not bad at all.

Final assessment:
Potassium from Webber Naturals is an example of a product that won't offend you, but it won't really impress you either. Its biggest positive is its clean formula, but even in this regard, several products in the rankings easily outperform it. In terms of price, we are sort of in the average range, but in terms of potassium content, the supplement already ranks rather below average relative to the competition in the rest of the rankings.

What is potassium?

Potassium is often mentioned in connection with ionic drinks, for example, but very rarely is it mentioned at all. However, there is very little talk about its essential role in the body and the importance of keeping an eye on the right levels. Potassium is one of the most abundant minerals in the human body and is even the most abundant positively charged ion inside cells. The vast majority of potassium is found in muscle cells, where it acts as an electrolyte, making it crucial for the transmission of nerve impulses between cells. The body cannot make it on its own, so we depend on dietary intake.

Functions of potassium in the human body

Probably the most important function that potassium has in our body is the regulation of the amount of water in the body. A significant part of water is found directly in the cells or between the cells. However, this amount of water is influenced by the concentration of electrolytes and, as we already know, potassium is one of the most important electrolytes in the body. It is therefore quite crucial for maintaining fluid balance and the optimal ratio of water in the tissues. Without the balance of water in the body, dehydration can very easily occur, which has an effect on the human body of countlessand can lead to serious health problems. We also wrote about the importance of adequate hydration in our article on the immune system.

Potassium is also important for maintaining the health of the nervous system. This is because nerve impulses are generated by ions (sodium and potassium), which are therefore essential for heart rhythms, muscle contractions and much more. Potassium also helps maintain the balance of acidic and basic substances in the body, which has a positive effect on healthy bones, muscles. It is also worth adding that sufficient intake of potassium helps prevent calcium excretion in the urine. This again helps maintain healthy bones and also prevents the formation of kidney stones.

How does potassium deficiency manifest itself?

In the context of the previous paragraph, it makes sense that potassium deficiency can cause quite unpleasant problems in the human body. One of these is an increased risk of diabetes. This is because people with low potassium levels cannot store sugars in the liver and muscles because the body starts to turn it into fat. This causes sugar levels to drop, and the body therefore starts to demand it again. This results in large fluctuations in sugar metabolism. But potassium deficiency also causes sleep problems and excessive fatigue, impairs concentration and memory, and causesdigestive problems, negatively affects the pH level in the body and increases the risk of kidney stones, and so on. The negatives associated with inadequate potassium intake are truly countless, and of courseIt follows that it is very important not to forget it in the diet.

Risks associated with excess potassium

While potassium deficiency can cause many health complications, the opposite extreme can also be quite frustrating. A condition where there is an increase in the level of potassium in the blood is called hyperkalemia. Its symptoms include irregular heart rhythms, tingling in the extremities or feelings of weakness. However, this is a relatively rare occurrence and, with a normal diet, it is not something to worry about.

What foods can I find potassium in?

Potassium is found in a large number of commonly available foods. Most of it is found in wheat bran, beans, lentils, potatoes, soybeans, figs, spinach, broccoli, avocados and kale. However, meat, nuts, yogurt, bananas and other fruits are not negligible sources of potassium. If a person eats a varied diet, he or she should be able to get enough potassium from regular food without too much trouble. However, it should be noted that although potassium is very bioavailable (the human body is able to process more than 90 % of the potassium ingested), it is easily destroyed by cooking foods. For this reason, fresh foods are more suitable for potassium intake. At the same time, the body of strength athletes naturally has higher requirements for the intake of individual nutrients than the rest of the population.

How much potassium to take daily?

Of course, when it comes to mineral supplementation, the first thing to consider is whether it makes sense. There are many substances that we are able to take in sufficient form in our normal diet and supplementation is completely unnecessary. But potassium is not such a case. The recommended daily allowance of potassium is 4.7 grams, but according to several studies in North America, the median daily intake of potassium for the general population is not even 3.6 grams. It is also worth noting that breastfeeding women should take in as much as 5.1 grams of potassium per day. It is clear from the above that potassium supplementation is important and this is doubly true in the case of athleteswhose body requires a significantly higher intake of all nutrients due to excessive physical stress.

How to take potassium?

As we already know, potassium is a mineral. In general, minerals should be supplemented with food. At the same time, minerals work better when they are taken together. However, even this rule has its exceptions. For example, calcium blocks the absorption of magnesium and therefore it is not advisable to supplement them together. In the case of potassium, you need to be especially careful with the amount of sodium. While potassium maintains ideal water levels inside cells, sodium performs the same function between cells. The relative ratio of these two substances therefore affects the overall fluid balance in the body. And since sodium is very abundant in the human body (mainly due to excessive use ofbut potassium is generally less abundant, this balance can easily be disturbed. It is therefore advisable to take potassium without sodium.

Who is potassium supplementation suitable for?

As usual, the first group that should consider potassium supplementation are athletes. Given the increased demands on the body, it is understandable that it is important to provide it with an above-normal amount of nutrients at the same time. In addition, potassium fits into the diet as it prevents excessive water retention in the body(see the relationship between potassium and sodium), which is especially appreciated by athletes before competition. In fact, however, even people who do not exercise at all can benefit from potassium supplementation. The reason for this is the above statistic that the average person simply does not take in as much potassium in their normal diet as would be ideal.

Breastfeeding women and people at high risk of developing diabetes have increased potassium intake requirements (the relationship between potassium and diabetes is discussed above). Supplementation should also be considered by people with a high salt intake due to excessive sodium concentrations in the body.

How to choose a quality potassium supplement?

No matter what supplement you're looking for, you should always put quality above all else. Very often it is more worthwhile to invest a little more in a quality supplement than to waste money on a poor quality product that will have no effect. The vast majority of potassium supplements contain potassium in the form of citrate. The latter is characterized by very good bioavailability and is definitely an excellent choice. Where some supplements already differ, however, is in the way they are taken. You may encounter potassium in the form of powder or tablets. The advantage of the powder is usually the absence of any additives, but the negative is the unpleasant taste. On the other hand, products in the form of capsules or tablets rely mainly on ease and convenience of use.

You also need to decide whether you want to take potassium alone or in combination with other minerals. As described above, taking all minerals together has its positives, but also its negatives. If you prefer a combination of all minerals, don't overlook our ranking of the best multivitamins.
