A native North American tree, the pecan tree has a crown height of up to 25 - 40 metres, produces annual nuts hidden in a smooth brown hardy shell. However, the Indian word pecan also translates as 'It takes a stone to break it'. When shelled, pecans are very similar to the familiar walnut. However, as botanists point out, it is not actually a nut, but a drupe, such as apricots.
