The Walnut (Juglans regia) is the fruit of the Royal Walnut, which grows to a height of 10-40 metres. The Royal Walnut is one of the most cultivated trees in the world. The first trees were cultivated in Europe in the Bronze Age, with more widespread cultivation in the early Middle Ages. The fruit is a nut encased in a thickened, stone-shelled drupe. The walnuts produced by the walnut tree are very nutritious, containing on average 70 % fat containing mainly very healthy unsaturated fatty acids, 18 % protein and approximately 3 % carbohydrates (sugars). They contain iron, selenium, zinc, potassium, vitamin E and a group of B vitamins. Nuts are shaped a bit like the brain and are also good for brain function. They also have anti-inflammatory properties, have a beneficial effect on cardiovascular disease, regulate blood pressure and lower cholesterol.
