Meizu Pop True: Excellent Wireless Headphones (Review)

I have been testing these wireless headphones from Meizu for 2 months now and I have to say with a clear conscience that these are really excellent headphones at a very nice price. But do they have any drawbacks? Greetings GeekBoy and let's review them in detail.

I got these Meizu headphones from Gearbest, where they cost around $80, roughly half the price of Apple's Airpods. So can they somehow match them? You'll learn all that during this detailed review, let's take a look at the packaging first.

Packaging

On top of the packaging, we find of course the headphones themselves in a case that serves as protection and also as a charging station for the headphones. Underneath we then find other accessories like replacement earplugs in different sizes, a USB-C charging cable and also a manual.

Design and construction

The Meizu Pop True are shaped like a earbud and so unlike the Airpods, they will fit in most people's ears a lot better. Personally, the Apple Airpods-style pumps have never held up for me, and how many times have I had to buy additional ear buds to wear them at all. That's not an issue with these headphones , and it's also no problem going for a run or a workout with them. They stay in my ear like a nailed on.

The headphones and the case are sold in white. The case is also very small and lightweight, so when I'm not running to school in the morning, I just the case and the headphones in my pants pocket and I can barely feel them thanks to the light weight. The case also makes a satisfying clicking sound every time you close it, which you will definitely become addicted to over time. Also, the headphones fit into the case all by themselves and neatly thanks to the magnet. On the front of the charging box we also find 4 blue LEDs that indicate the current charge percentage, of course after 25%. On the underside there is then a hole for charging with a USB-C cable and on the back we find a small and inconspicuous button. This is used to check the battery status of the charging box, so if you press it, the corresponding number of LEDs will light up.

The headphones are backlit and glow or flash blue depending on whether they're in the box and charging or waiting to pair with your phone. When successfully paired and listening to music, they then don't emit any backlighting so as not to attract attention.

The Meizu Pop True also have IPX5 certification, which means they can withstand minor splashes of water and sweat.

Connectivity

You'll also want to know if these headphones connect to your phone properly and quickly. The initial pairing with your phone takes a little longer, which is understandable. Anyway, after a successful first pairing, the headphones are no longer connected via Bluetoothand before you can take them out of the box and put them both in your ear, they're already connected to your phone.

The headphones have Bluetooth version 4.2 and connect to both Android and iOS phones. I also tried connecting them to our Samsung TV and the pairing went fine again.

Features

The Meizu headphones have a touch layer on their end that you can use to control the paired phone. The headphones have pre-set combinations, where for example you can lightly press the right earpiece to answer a call or pause a song. Unfortunately, the headphones don't always register some taps, so you'll sometimes try to pause a song and just can't get it right, which is a big shame. But, for example, the volume up and down that you do by holding your finger on the touch layer works precisely. So the headphones only register the small taps that are just used to e.g. pause a song poorly

When I mentioned taking a call, the headphones also have a microphone. I tried this once during a phone call and the other party reportedly heard me very loudly and clearly, so a big plus. Just beware that you'll have to take one earpiece out of your ear and put it closer to your mouth to be heard well.

Sound

And we're getting to the sound quality, which I'm sure you're also interested in. The headphones have great bass, the mids are slightly lowered and then the highs are very clear so they don't pull on your ears. If you are not a complete audiophile like me, these headphones will definitely satisfy your needs. They sound slightly above average.

Endurance

My personal experience is that the headphones alone, which have an integrated 85 mAh battery, last 2-3 hours of listening. The charging box itself then has 700 mAh, so you can charge the headphones from it about 10 more times. So if you're going on a short vacation, you can leave the charging cable or wireless charger at home. The headphones will last you 20-30 hours.

And that brings us to the charging method. You can either charge the Meizu Pop True using the USB-C cable on the bottom of the box, or wirelessly as well. In fact, the box has wireless charging technology. Using the USB-C cable, I recharged the headphone case from 0 to 100% percent in about an hour and a half.

Price and where to buy

The headphones can be purchased starting at $80, which translates to about or 70 euros. On AliExpress you can sometimes pick them up for $70, but I'd rather recommend the GearBest store. There, the headphones are a bit more expensive and you'll also pay a little extra for shipping, but if you chooseyou choose priority line delivery, all fees, including any customs and VAT, will go to GearBest.

So for you, the amount is final and you don't have to worry about whether the package will end up with DHL, who might charge you additional fees.

Conclusion

If you've read this far, I can recommend the Meizu Pop True headphones with a clear conscience. Maybe it's just the not-so-perfectly-functioning touchpad on the headphones that bothers me, but otherwise they're all pros. They last a hell of a long time on a single charge, the design of the box and the headphones won't let you down either, and for half the price of Apple Airpods they're simply worth getting. The only shame is that they are not sold in any of the Czech stores, but as I mentioned, buying them on GearBest will definitely be a good choice.
