MusclePharm Combat Powder - Multi-ingredient protein with unbeatable composition and taste (Review)

Multi-ingredient proteins belong to the absolute top of today's supplement market, although they still stand somewhat in the shadow of the unrivalled whey proteins. However, they have been proven to release amino acids into the body over a longer period of time than any single-ingredient protein.

MusclePharm's Combat Powder is a good exception, as it is one of the most popularCombat Protein is the most popular protein, surpassing even many whey proteins in popularity. And that's why we decided to test it in today's review. How did we find it taste? Are the protein sources of good quality? What bothered us about it? You can find out all this and much more in our review today.

At the beginning it remains to remind that Combat Powder took one of the top positions in our comparison of the best multi-ingredient protein formulations, so if you are more interested in the comparison with the competition than the review itself, be sure to take a look at the ranking.

Ingredients without percentage of sources

If you read our reviews on a regular basis, you'll know that we always break down the ingredients first because they are the most important. In the case of MusclePharm's Combat Powder, the protein sources used are very appropriately chosen. However, there is still a comparison with, for example, the MPS-5 protein from Czech Virus, which we reviewed recently, a minor shortcoming. Namely, the manufacturer does not indicate what percentage of which protein source is contained in the product. So as a consumer, you have an idea of the protein sources, but you don't know if 90% represents just one source. But the individual sources look like this:

  • Whey Protein Isolate, which is a quick source of protein containing minimal lactose and sugars.
  • Partially hydrolyzed whey protein, which is a very quickly absorbed protein rich in amino acids. Its purpose after training is to stimulate digestion and kick-start protein synthesis.
  • Micellar casein, which is a very slow protein source. It is released over a period of up to 7 hours, protecting muscle mass from catabolism and gradually supplying the body with amino acids.
  • Whey protein concentrate, which is the most common and basic source of protein. Thanks to the gentle production process, all the important bioactive fractions are preserved, so the protein helps not only to build muscle mass, but also to strengthen the immune system.
  • Egg white, which is one of the slower sources of protein, but has a good amino spectrum (especially in terms of BCAA and arginine content) and can positively stimulate hormone production

Similarly, in terms of composition, one could also criticise the content of various emulsifiers and flavourings that might not be present in a quality supplement. However, in the overall assessment of the composition, the protein is very good, the chosen proteins are of high quality and this is the most important thing.

Muscle Pharm Combat Powder Ingredients
Although there are some minor flaws in the composition, we can definitely recommend it.

A taste that will please even the pickiest of athletes

Combat Powder comes in six flavors, which is a nice plus compared to many competing brands, because there is something for everyone. We've only managed to try three so far, but we've still been frankly delighted with them. A more thorough evaluation of the flavours we have tried goes something like this:

  • Chocolate flavour (9/10) intrigued me so much that I decided to try the whole pack. The taste is probably due to the less than 6% cocoa powder very authentic, no protein There is no overly artificial aroma, but it really tastes like chocolate. Compared to the likes of MPS-5 that we reviewed recently, the chocolate is not as intense, however, you will definitely enjoy this supplement after your workout. I give the flavor 9 points out of 10
  • The strawberry flavour (8/10) was not as good as the chocolate, but I still enjoyed it. Honestly, I'm not a big fan of fruity protein optionsI always find them much more artificial than the tried and true cocoa or vanilla. The strawberry flavour already looks sharply pink and thus a bit unnatural. On the other hand, if you like strawberry milkshake, you'll be totally blown away by this flavor because that's exactly what it resembles. It may taste a little sweeter than chocolate, but I believe it will still find its fans. Strawberry deserves 8 out of 10.
  • The cookie flavor (9/10) was the flavor I was initially afraid of because of my previous experiences (for example, with the same flavor from Extrifit) were poor. However, MusclePharm has produced a tasty flavor that definitely has something to offer and is absolutely not flavorfulThe flavour is not artificial, there are no cookie chunks settling at the bottom of the shaker and overall the flavour is very balanced. I give it 9 points out of 10.
SEBASTIAN'S Flavour Review
To evaluate the flavours, we also invited our second editor, Sebastian, who tested the same flavours:
  • The chocolate flavour tasted very pleasant, compared to the compared to other proteins, there is no artificial aftertaste, which is definitely a big plus. If you are a fan of classic flavours such as cocoa and vanilla, you won't be disappointed. The chocolate variant deserves 9 points out of 10.
  • The strawberry flavour tastes a bit more artificial than the previous chocolate flavour. As is usually the case, the protein has an artificial pink colour and tastes like strawberry pudding from the school canteen. But if you don't mind this and like sweet proteins, it's definitely worth a try. The strawberry flavor earns a solid 7 points.
  • The cookie flavor appealed to me the most out of all the flavors mentioned. Again, there is no artificial aftertaste, which is very common with similar flavors. On the contrary, the protein tasted very mild and pleasant. The cookie flavour gets 9 out of 10 points from me.
Muscle Pharm Combat Powder flavours
Basically, we can say that all the flavours we tried impressed us and are therefore a good choice.

Trouble-free preparation and solubility

When it comes to preparing the protein, we didn't have a single problem. Combat Powder dissolved without any problems, did not form lumps and did not foam in any way. I used 300 ml of water for the preparation, which I consider optimal, because thanks to this the protein was neither too sweet nor bland in taste. The cookie flavour was the only one that had whole pieces settling at the bottom of the shaker, however it was no problem, just shake the shaker a little and the pieces immediately dispersed.

Muscle Pharm Combat Powder Preparation
It was enough to shake the protein in the shaker a few times and it completely dissolved.

Very good value for money

When we created our rankings of the best multi-ingredient, we found that MusclePharm Combat Powder is one of the cheapest proteins on the market. One serving will set you back roughly £15, a price that relatively few proteins can boast and none of this quality. This is another reason why we recommend the protein not only for students who want to save money and don't want to cram all their finances into supplements.

Final evaluation of the protein

We rate the Muscle Pharm Combat Powder protein very positively. The composition is very good except for minor flaws, the chosen proteins are of high quality and there is not much to complain about. Especially when you consider the fact that it is one of the cheapest proteins on the market. So it's definitely a good choice not only for students, but for anyone who doesn't want to invest their entire paycheck in supplements, but still demands quality supplements.
