PVL Mutant Pro - The Protein that Rich Piana used to use himself (Review)

The Mutant brand of supplements originates from Canada and has one interesting thing about it. This brand sponsored the world famous bodybuilder Rich Piana.

In today's review, we will feature a Mutant Pro product that I have been using for the past few months. Is this the tastiest protein on the market? How did it hold up in our formulation test? Find out below.

I've been using Mutant Pro personally for a long time, so I've managed to taste all the available flavors and today's review will be focused from the perspective of a long time user of this protein.

The ingredients, which are not much to complain about

In the case of Mutant Pro , it is a three-component protein that consists of WPC whey concentrate, WPH whey hydrolysate and WPI whey isolate. This means a happy medium of absorbability, speed of digestion and protein quality.

An interesting point in the composition is the use of MCT oil, which has only recently appeared on the Czech market. It is an oil with a medium-long chain triglyceride and in this particular protein I would commend the use of MCT oil composed entirely of coconut oil. In fact, there are MCT oils that contain palm oil and other substitutes. Here in the protein, the main benefits of MCT oil are rapid absorption and digestive support.

In addition, there are thickeners (guar gum) and emulsifiers (sunflower lecithin or soy lecithin) in the protein. lecithin), which are commonly used in today's foods and supplements. They have a low level of toxicity.

The protein also contains the enzymes lactase and protease. Unfortunately, it uses not only natural but also artificial flavourings. If I wanted to nitpick the protein, I would criticize the use of sucralose. Yes, sucralose is a harmless and commonly used artificial sweetener, but personally I would have appreciated the use of, for example, stevia. This is already used by the well-known brand Bulk Powders in the Natural Pure Whey protein.

In one scoop you will find:

  • 24 g of protein
  • 2 g of carbohydrates
  • 11.7 g EAA
  • 5.5 g BCAA
  • 4.3 g glutamine

If we could find the percentage of each ingredient in the protein composition, we would be more satisfied.

Great taste

The main advantage of this protein is definitely the taste. The protein is available in a total of four flavours, which I absolutely loved. The flavour is rich, creamy and just the right amount of sweet. How I rate specific flavors:

  • The cookies & cream flavor (10/10) is my favorite and really deserves full points in my opinion. It's not a common flavour, but it's a pleasant surprise. I loved it for its creamy taste and great consistency not only in shakes, but also in porridge and other recipes. This flavor is also wonderfully soluble and doesn't make any lumps.
  • The chocolate flavor (8/10) has the same iconic taste as the regular chocolate proteins I've tried. If you're a fan of sweet flavors, you definitely won't go wrong. In fact, chocolate is the sweetest of all the flavours. If you can't even smell chocolate protein anymore, then the aforementioned cookies and cream flavor will be a great choice for you.
  • The banana cream flavour (7/10) will neither impress nor offend. Most banana proteins don't taste like banana at all, and the reason is that the taste of banana is very hard to imitate. This protein is no exception and tastes like a typical "banana" protein, which is also a bit creamier. I especially appreciate the sweet taste and I appreciate that there is no bitter tail like in some proteins.
  • The vanilla flavour (9/10) surprised me a lot, as vanilla is usually quite bland and watery. This is not the case here. It's sweet, has an acceptable consistency, mixes well and doesn't make any lumps. Vanilla is a sure thing that you can't go wrong with.

Mutant Pro's protein flavors are really fine-tuned.

How did I prepare the protein?

I would recommend 200-250ml of water for ideal mixing. For this amount of water, the protein is flavourful, lump-free and has a creamy consistency.

Plus, it's great to use in meals too. Compared to some other proteins, it is easy to mix in porridge, for example. The cookies and cream flavour even thickens the porridge pleasantly.

Our tip!
If you are not supplementing your protein after a workout, you can also mix it with milk. With milk, the protein gets an even better taste. We wrote more about the combination of protein and milk in our separate article.

A lot of music for little money

The big advantage of Mutant Pro 2.27 kg is the price, which is around 890 kc per pixel without discounts. One scoop will cost you about 12 kc, which is a great deal in terms of price/quality ratio.

Compared to multi-ingredient protein from Czech Virus we are about less per dose, but with Mutant Pro protein we find a slightly worse composition. We appreciate when manufacturers of the best multi-ingredient proteins indicate the percentage of each protein component, Mutant Pro does not provide such information on the website or on the packaging. But all in all, this is a quality protein that we are not afraid to recommend to any of you. Unfortunately, it doesn't hold a candle to the best multi-ingredient proteins.

Mutant Pro vs Mutant Whey

A lot of readers don't know which of these two proteins is the better choice. The major difference is in the protein content, while Mutant Pro is an 80 (protein up to 80% protein), Mutant Whey is a 60. In addition, Mutant Whey contains higher amounts of carbohydrates and fats, so it is more suited to volume training.

Personally, I think Mutant Whey has too much in it. 3 types of sweeteners, 4 types of whey processing, it's not something I'm looking for. Even though Mutant Whey is cheaper, I'd rather invest in a higher quality Mutant Pro protein.

Final rating

The protein won me over mainly on taste, which is a pretty subjective matter. For the sake of completeness of this review, I gave a taste of the cookies & cream flavor to 5 of my friends, with four of them rating it positively.

If you're looking for an affordable protein with great taste and quality ingredients, Mutant Pro is a great choice for you. After all, this is the protein that I personally currently use in my preparation and can only recommend it.
