If you don't have any dietary restrictions, whey proteins are undoubtedly the best option for you in terms of price/quality ratio. But as soon as you want to eliminate all lactose, or simply because of ethical convictions prefer a plant-based diet, you have to settle for vegan proteins. In our Vilgain Plant Based Protein review, however, we'll show you that plant-based proteins don't have to mean lower quality and certainly not worse taste. Let's see what our observations are from trying this product.
Content of the review
At the beginning it remains to add that this protein has dominated our vegan protein comparison for the current year, so if you're interested in a direct comparison with the competition, you can also read the aforementioned ranking. But now back to today's review.
Ingredients as they should be
Ingredients are often highly problematic with vegan proteins, as plant-based proteins typically contain only minimal amounts of one (or more) amino acids. However, Vilgain has solved this protein, like many quality competitor products, by using multiple plant proteins. Therefore, as a protein source, you'll find pea protein (methionine-poor and lysine-rich) and brown rice protein (lysine-poor, methionine-rich) in a 5:1 ratio. In addition, the product contains added methionine, natural flavouring, xanthan gum and steviol glycosides. It is thus a perfect composition in which you will find absolutely no unnecessary artificial flavours or controversial sweeteners.
Hassle-free preparation
In preparation, we opted for the classic and preferred method of mixing by many athletes in a shaker, using the recommended 250 ml of water for one 30-gram serving of protein. The protein was mixed in no time and without any problems, it did not foam or form lumps, so we have nothing to complain about in terms of preparation. However, like other (not only vegan) proteins, it has a variety of other uses. For example, you can add it to your breakfast porridge or use it to partially replace flour in baking, for example. Like the classic protein, it can also be mixed in milk for a better taste, butWhen using conventional cow's milk, the protein is of course no longer suitable for vegans. A good option is almond or coconut milk, but in this case you have to take into account a slightly longer digestion time.
Don't expect the taste of whey
If you're used to whey protein, you might be a bit surprised by the taste of this protein. In fact, whey usually provides a smooth, creamy texture to the supplement, whereas the rice isolate contained in the supplement is characterised by, among other things, a slightly rougher, sand-like consistency. If you are switching from whey protein to vegan protein, for exampleyou will probably have to get used to it for a while, but compared to competingproducts, this sandy consistency is still relatively mild, because the protein is not only rice protein is also made up of pea protein, which is not as intense in this regard.
In terms of the taste of the protein, however, we have nothing to complain about. Vilgain has relied on the seasoned flavours Vanilla or Chocolate in this respect, which is perhaps a good thing, because the experimentalexperimenting with more exotic variants may not work out very well with taste-specific products such as vegetable proteins. We would definitely recommend trying the Chocolate variant, which is also more highly praised by others. reviewers and which offers a nice authentic cocoa taste thanks to the natural cocoa powder. However, the vanilla variant is not bad either and we have to appreciate that it is not overly strong and has a pleasant, unadulterated taste.
Perfect price
At the time of writing this review, a kilo pack comes out to 599 crowns, which means you'll pay about 18 crowns for one serving. For context, it's worth mentioning that, for example, Reflex's Plant Based Protein, which came out top in our vegan comparisonprotein in our comparison of vegan proteins, comes out at about 27 crowns per serving, but the third product only costs about 15 crowns. While Vilgain is roughly in the middle of the table in terms of price and quality, it is hard to find competition.
Conclusion.
In conclusion, it remains to add that this protein is truly the king among vegan proteins and it is very hard to find a similar product on the market. Its composition is perfect, the taste is decent and we even dare to say that it is better than most of the competing products we had the opportunity to try. Preparation is hassle-free and when you add the fact that it is priced very well, there is nothing to worry about. So if you prefer a plant-based diet and are looking for a convenient source of protein, Vilgain Plant Based Protein should be the obvious choice.
