Promising ingredients but an indeterminate protein source

The most important aspect of any product is, of course, the ingredients. In the case of Vilgain's protein bars, the ingredients vary quite significantly depending on the flavor you choose. However, the protein source is the same for all flavours. The manufacturer decided to rely on milk protein, which is characterized by a longer amino acid release time and slower digestibility. For this reason, it is suitable throughout the day, but it is not very suitable as a source of amino acids after training, when it is better to prefer classic whey protein. What I personally see as a problem, however, is the lack of any more specific information as to what kind of milk protein it is. The term may refer to a premium micellar casein, but it can also refer to but calcium caseinate, which is of poor quality and almost useless to the body. This makes it virtually impossible to evaluate the protein source in any detail, which is not a positive thing.

As for the rest of the composition, there is certainly not much room for criticism. In all the flavours you will find plenty of corn fibre, nuts (almonds, cashewsu, pecans or hazelnuts) and not infrequently you will also find coconut. Conversely, there are no controversial preservatives, flavourings or sweeteners in any of the bars. Each bar contains 18 to 19 grams of protein, which is comparable to the best of the competition. The same can be said for the carbohydrates, fats and overall energy content of the bar.

Very hilarious flavours that will get you

Vilgain Protein Bar is available in a total of six flavors, and we had the opportunity to try four of them. Generally speaking, they all tasted very good and it's definitely understandable that Vilgain's protein bars are so popular due to their taste. We rate the specific flavours as follows:

  • Coconut (8.5/10) - Personally, I'm not a big fan of coconut and that's something to keep in mind in this context. But I have to say that this bar was a very pleasant surprise for me. Along with the coconut, the white chocolate is also very prominent, but it's not overly sweet, so the final combination is very nicely balanced. If you are a fan of coconut, you will definitely be satisfied.
  • White chocolate/almond (9.5/10) - After the first taste I wasn't sure if I had accidentally opened theI didn't accidentally open the coconut flavour, as it's the one that is quite prominent in this case as well. Next to the white chocolate, however, it tastes very good and again, the chocolate is rather mild and doesn't have an overly sweet taste. You can't miss the almonds here either, but to be honest I found them a bit understated compared to the coconut. Together, though, it works great.
  • Nougat/ Hazelnut (9/10) - If you're a fan of really honest nut bars, you'll definitely enjoy this one. The hazelnuts are quite prominent in this flavour and are again complemented by theThe subtle taste of chocolate, however, is not too sweet in this case either.
  • Cinnamon Roll (9.5/10) - In my opinion, the most successful flavour is clearlycinnamon roll, which reminds me quite a bit of Christmas candy. Again, it's the same as all the other flavours - the bar is sweet, but not overly so. The peanuts are also noticeable here and all the flavours are complemented beautifully by the white chocolate.

Personally, I like the fact that the Vilgain brand relies on more subtle flavours in all the flavours and doesn't overdo it with the sweetening. At the same time, I appreciate that in every bite you can smell a nut or some other piece of one of the ingredients contained in the bar. It makes the overall taste much more natural. In terms of consistency, the bars are a bit stiff, but for the proportions of protein bars, it's very good.

You'll have to pay extra

The great taste and the pretty hilarious ingredients are largely reflected in the price. In fact, compared to the competition, one protein bar from Vilgain comes out relatively expensive. At the time of writing, one bar costs 59 crowns, which is at least 10 crowns more than the bars from the top of our ranking. What are we going to say, that's quite a lot for bars weighing 60 grams. To what extent the high price is justified is hard to say - in terms of composition Vilgain Protein Bar does not stand out from the crowd. If you're looking for a bar to include in your diet on a regular basis, it's probably not the best solution because of the price.

Final assessment

My feelings about this bar are kind of mixed. The taste and the ingredients used deserve unequivocal praise, with the exception of the protein source. The vague "milk protein" formulation doesn't allow the ingredients to be evaluated any further, which I simply consider a negative. I am also a bit embarrassed by the price of the bar, as it is really high compared to the competition. Also for this reason I would recommend Vilgain Protein Bar especially to those who are all about good taste when choosing protein bars. However, if you're making your decision primarily based on price, you'll be better suited with a different product.

Still, in my opinion, it is a bar that is worth trying at least once. And if buying protein bars is more of a spur of the moment thing for you and the differencel ten crowns is not particularly important to you, it is definitely worth giving it a chance.

If you are not impressed by this bar, let me once again refer you to our protein bar comparisonbars, where we have analysed the main advantages and disadvantages of the best products on the market.
