Who doesn't like pancakes for breakfast? But unfortunately, this goodness is not one of the healthiest foods and therefore often does not make it into the diet of athletes at all. Fortunately, however, nowadays it's not a problem to prepare pancakes that contain enough protein and relatively few calories. Thanks to this, you can enjoy them without regrets, even if you follow a very strict diet. The brand Vilgain has recently introduced its Protein Pancake & Waffle Mix, thanks to which you can prepare such pancakes in minutes without any effort. But do these protein pancakes really have such good nutritional values? And how do they compare to the competition? Find out in our review today.
Content of the review
For most athletes, the Vilgain brand needs no introduction at all, as it is one of the largest sellers of sports supplements and health foods in the Czech Republic. In addition to classic dietary supplements, you can also find a large number ofhealthy ingredients for cooking or prepared meals with excellent nutritional values. You can read more about this brand, for example, in our review of Vilgain Energy Bar BIO.
A great formula with few flaws
A stumbling block for many similar products is poor quality ingredients. Pancakes may look good and taste great at first glance, but if they have poor quality ingredients and poor nutritional values, they simply won't win over athletes. In this case, Vilgain relied on a combination of three types of flour (gluten-free oat, almond and tapioca) and two types of protein. As far as the flour is concerned, we must appreciate that in all cases it is gluten-free. This makes the pancakes suitable for people with celiac disease. In all three cases, it is a very high quality flour, although it is worth noting that almond flour contains significantly more fat and ultimately more calories than the other two.
The protein blend consists of whey isolate and milk protein. Unfortunately, the manufacturer does not give us the milk proteins to go with the milk proteins.Any additional information (as with many of their other products). Thus, we cannot say for sure whether the term milk protein is meant to be used to describewe mean high quality micellar casein or low quality calcium caseinate. This, of course, spoils the impression of the whole product, because we simply do not have complete information about what the ingredients actually contain. Last but not least, we also find cane sugar, baking powder and Himalayan salt in the ingredients.
In 100 g of the product there are 415 kcal, 15 g of fat, 37 g of carbohydrates, 34 g of protein and 2.5 g of fiber. We therefore rate the ingredients positively, although compared to the competition, the pancakes contain quite a lot of calories and fat. On the other hand, they do contain more protein, which is definitely a big positive.
How to prepare pancakes?
As I wrote in the introduction, preparing these pancakes is really simple. Just mix 70 g of the mixture in 80 ml of cold water (if you want to achieve the consistency of waffles, use 100 ml of cold water), let it stand for one or two minutes and then fry it on a slightly hot griddle. You can use a little oil for the toasting, or use a waffle maker instead of a frying pan.
How you flavour your pancakes is up to you. Since they don't have any distinct flavour on their own, you don't have to limit yourself and can enjoy them exactly as you like. Our article 15 natural and healthy sugar substitutes will help you choose healthy ingredients for flavouring.
Fluffy consistency
As I wrote in the previous paragraph, pancakes themselves have no distinct taste. However, if you flavour the batter with stevia before frying, for example, the pancakes are guaranteed to taste good even when dry. When choosing similar pancake mixes, the consistency of the resulting batter is very important. In this case, you can look forward to really fluffy pancakes, so I personally have to rate the consistency really well.
Higher price
Given the very hilarious ingredients, excellent consistency and ease of preparation, it probably won't surprise anyone too much that you'll have to pay extra for this pancake mix. At the time of writing this review, one serving comes out to about , which is quite a lot. On the other hand, it's fair to mention that Smartfuel's protein pancakes (review) are similarly priced. ranked first in our comparison of the best protein pancakes. The price is therefore quite high, but the resulting value for money is not bad at all.
Final summary
Vilgain Protein Pancake & Waffle Mix ultimately earns a very good rating from usas it offers a very decent formula combined with a wonderfully fluffy consistency. It does come at a bit of a premium in price, but considering all the positives, we find the price to be adequate. So if you want to prepare delicious protein pancakes without any effort, we can highly recommend the Protein Pancake & Waffle Mix from Vilgain.
