Biotech Zero Bar is a protein bar that at first glance impresses with its almost zero content of simple carbohydrates. And since it ranked very well in our list of the best bars, it definitely deserves a separate review.
So is it worth buying? Is it a good choice for your diet? Does it taste good or is the absence of sugars noticeable? You can read my unbiased assessment in the review of the bar below.
Content of the review
I tried the Zero Bar in four flavours, which I found most interesting - chocolate and hazelnut, double chocolate, raspberry and cappuccino. But in the following review you will not only find out their taste, but also my view on the composition and price of this bar. So let's get to it.
Good ingredients and zero simple sugars
What any athlete with a strict diet will appreciate about the Zero Bar protein bar is the near-zero simple carbohydrate content. There's not even 0.5g of sugar per serving, but you'll find 20g of protein and 6g of fibre. Personally, I also consider the absence of gluten and lactose as additional benefits, which will be especially appreciated by people with their intolerance.
On the other hand, the negative side is that some of the protein sources in some flavours include low qualitycalcium caseinate, which is produced by a chemical reaction with hydroxide, leading to significant protein degradation. It is therefore a very poorly utilized protein that should have no place in a quality bar. Furthermore, the overall impression is also spoiled by palm fat, which is also contained only in some variants of bars.
Overall, however, I like the composition, the primary sources of protein are whey isolate and eggegg white, which are great usable proteins, caseinate is represented in small amounts.
Very nice price
The pleasant price is undoubtedly the biggest advantage of Zero Bar. The classic price (without discount) is , which is really very good for a bar of relatively high quality and also with zero carbohydrates. If you compare its price with, for example, Essential Pure Bar, which was the only one to beat Zero Bar in our protein bar testing, this one comes out about cheaper. So if you are looking for a great bar at a good price, I can definitely recommend Zero Bar.
The absence of sugars is unfortunately reflected in the taste
If you were primarily looking forward to the taste of the Zero Bar, you will probably be disappointed. The fact that it doesn't contain any simple carbohydrates is unfortunately reflected in the taste, making the bar extremely bland to my taste. When I tested the chocolate flavours, they were relatively tasty, but the fruit flavours (in my case raspberry) were disgusting. Specifically, I would rate each variant as follows:
- The double chocolate (8/10) was probably my favourite. It wasn't too sweet, but the taste was really chocolatey, some might compare it to brownies or a similar dessert. I rate it 8 out of 10.
- Chocolate and Hazelnut (7.5/10) was another flavour that I liked. Its flavour was reminiscent of chocolate covered peanut wafers from the supermarket, only again it wasn't as distinctive. I rate it 7.5 out of 10.
- The cappuccino (5/10) was already much worse. It wasn't downright bad, but it didn't impress either. It was bland and compared to similar flavours from other brands it was quite lacking. I therefore rate it 5 out of 10.
- Apple pie (9/10) was a very pleasant surprise for me, as it really tasted like apple pie. The bar was soft and did not leave an unpleasant aftertaste in the mouth. That's why I give it 9 out of 10.
- The raspberry (1/10) was perhaps the worst of all. I didn't like it at all and it left a really unpleasant aftertaste in my mouth. It feels completely artificial and has nothing to do with raspberry at all. I give it 1 point out of 10.
- I definitely rate the chocolate and banana (9/10) positively. It tasted exactly as the name suggests - you can smell dark chocolate enriched with the flavour of banana. The bar was a little stiffer, but otherwise really delicious. I rate it 9 out of 10.
When is the perfect time for a Zero Bar?
Although you can indulge in a Zero Bar pretty much anytime, as we mentioned in our article on the ideal timing of a protein bar, of all thetions, these products are most suitable to take after exercise, when you get a sweet tooth, or when you need a higher calorie intake.
From my own experience , I recommend protein bars especially when you need to maintain a higherhigher protein intake, but you have only limited dietary options (hiking trips, car trips,...).
Final evaluation
Overall, I rate Zero Bar rather positively. It doesn't contain unnecessarily large amounts of sugars, so it fits perfectly into your diet, you'll find fiber in it and it doesn't even contain gluten or lactose. Well, when you add to that the good price, there's basically nothing to complain about.
On the other hand, it also contains some low-quality ingredients and the taste is not so great either. So if you're looking for something to kill your sweet cravings in your diet, Zero Bar might be a good choice. But if you're looking for a great tasting experience with good nutritional value, you'll have to look elsewhere. But you don't have to despair, because in that case, a good candidate is Quest Bar, for example, which you can find a full review on our website.
