L-Lysine is the basic building block of all proteins in the human body and is a very important amino acid for muscle growth (proteosynthesis). The presence of two amino groups in the Lysine molecule allows for a large number of interactions, especially with peptides and muscle fibre proteins. Lysine also plays an important role in tissue regeneration and in the production of hormones, enzymes and defence substances.
Lysine, an essential amino acid, is also a building block of the amino acid carnitine (fat breakdown), as well as hydroxylysine, which is an important component of ligaments and cartilage. Lysine can be further converted in a one-step process to glutamic acid, i.e. glutamine. Lysine is also involved in the regeneration of BCAA stores from BCKA in liver tissue.
Lysine, together with Leucine, is the only pair of so-called Lysine is the only two pair of ketogenic amino acids, i.e. amino acids that can be converted directly into the macroergic compound Acetyl Coenzyme A, which is the starting point of the so-called "ketogenic" amino acid. It is the starting point of the citrate cycle. From one molecule of Acetyl Coenzyme A, 12 molecules of ATP = cellular energy are produced in the citrate cycle.
Lysine is an essential amino acid, therefore the human body cannot synthesize it and it must be supplied by food.
