Alpha-lipoic acid is a natural antioxidant that provides benefits for the liver, nerves and protects against oxidation. Used successfully in Europe, alpha lipoic acid also supports energy production and sugar metabolism and by binding to metals, it helps your body rid itself of ingested toxins. According to research, damage caused by free radicals is a major problem that leads to the aging of our organs. Alpha-lipoic acid is very effective in removing free radicals and thus prolonging the aging process. Alpha-lipoic acid has been called a universal antioxidant due to its ability to act both in the extracellular fluid and in the cell and increase glutathione levels.

One of the most beneficial activities of alpha-lipoic acid is to enhance the functions of other important antioxidants by recycling them. This appears to be achieved, for example, by stopping tocopherol radicals or reducing vitamin C or increasing levels of ubiquinol (a derivative of CoQ10) and glutathione. These steps help to regenerate vitamin E. No serious side effects have been reported in clinical trials, even at high doses. Allergic skin reactions and possible hypoglycemia have occurred in some diabetic patients. R-lipoic acid is more biologically active than alpha-lipoic acid at a slightly higher cost.
