Detailed comparison of probiotics

1. Swanson - Ultimate 16 Probiotics ans prebiotics

Swanson - Ultimate 16 Probiotics ans prebiotics

The first place in our ranking belongs to Dr. Stephen Langer's Ultimate 16 Strain Probiotics with FOS from Swanson. The imaginary title of the best probiotics was earned by this product thanks to its perfect price-quality ratio. It can easily match even the strongest competition in terms of composition, while keeping its price very low.

Advantages:

  • High-quality composition
  • 3.29 billion CFU per dose
  • Perfect price/quality ratio
  • Contains FOS prebiotics

Who makes it:

Swanson Health Products began its operations in 1969 in the United States. The founders set out to bring quality dietary supplements to the market to help people achieve a healthy lifestyle. In 2018, the company rebranded and has since then simply called itself Swanson. The company's repertoire now includes pet food and nutritional supplements.

In one serving (1 capsule) you will find:
  • 3.29 billion CFU
  • 50 mg FOS
  • 16 probiotic strains

Swanson's probiotics contain a truly broad spectrum of probiotic strains. This is a big plus, because they can replenish many more bacteria in the gut that may have been eradicated by antibiotics, for example. In addition, there are 3.29 billion CFUs per capsule (this is the unit that represents the number of activethe more colonies, the stronger the effect), which is a very good dose. To make matters worse, we also find fructooligosaccharides (FOS), which serve as a prebiotic, i.e. as food for probiotics. This ensures their better effect.

Final assessment:

In terms of composition, we must clearly praise Swanson. There are some probiotics that impressed us a bit more with their composition, but Swanson clearly outperformed them with its price. In the end, Swanson is a really high quality product at an extremely reasonable price. In terms of value for money, you would be hard pressed to find better probiotics on the market. That said, I can highly recommend them to anyone looking for real quality at a bargain price.

2. Now Foods Probiotic-10 50 miliard CFU

Now Foods Probiotic-10 50 miliard CFU

The number two in our ranking is Probiotics-10 50 Billion from Now Foods. The magical thing about them is that their name contains all the important information about their ingredients. Now Foods has two other variants of this product - Probiotics-10 25 Billion and Probiotics-10 100 Billion. For the purposes of this ranking, we have decided to take the happy medium, becausebecause it is the best value for money, but we can highly recommend the other 2 variants.

Pros:

  • 50 billion CFU
  • Contains FOS
  • Wide spectrum of probiotic strains

Disadvantages:

  • Higher price

Who makes them:

Now Foods' roots date back to 1968. Since then, the company has strived to use its products to pass on the values associated with a healthy lifestyle. The company's emphasis on premium quality is understandably a top priority. In addition to dietary supplements, the company also produces products such as cosmetics, health foods and pet food.

IN ONE SERVING (1 capsule) YOU WILL FIND:
  • 50 billion CFU
  • 10 probiotic strains
  • Fructooligosaccharides

In terms of CFU content, we have nothing to complain about Now Foods. We have nothing to say about them, because their content ranks first in our ranking. The content of 10 probiotic strains is also commendable. The FOS content is also a big plus, but unfortunately, the manufacturer does not specify the amount of FOS, so we cannot reliably comment on it. Ultimately, however, we have to praise the entire formula and this is especially true for the incredible 50 billion CFU content.

Final assessment:

Now Foods has presented a really high quality probiotic that deservedly found itself at the top of our ranking. Of course, the quality of the ingredients was also reflected in the price. The price is much higher than that of Swanson's probiotics. It was the price/quality ratio that was key to the final decision on who would take the top spot. Both products have their strengths and we can highly recommend either of them. In fact, in terms of ingredients, you will find few products that can compete with Now Foods, and they are in a much higher price range. Ultimately, we have to recommend Now Foods to anyone who values quality above all else and is willing to pay a little extra for it.

3. Vilgain Probiotics

Vilgain Probiotics

Probiotics from Vilgain have earned our attention thanks to their generous CFU content and high number of probiotic cultures. To support the resulting effect, the manufacturer has added prebiotics in the form of galactooligosaccharides (GOS) and inulin.

Benefits:

  • High number of probiotic cultures
  • Also contains prebiotics
  • Very pleasant price
  • Excellent composition

Disadvantages:

  • May contain traces of milk and fish, so may be a problem for those with allergies

Who makes it:
Not too long ago, you might have come across Vilgain products under the brand name Actin. This is the company behind the Vilgain brand. The reason for the name change was expansion abroad, but otherwise the products of this manufacturer have not changed at all. Aktin as such perhaps does not even need to be introduced to anyone. Currently, it is one of the most popular manufacturers and sellers of sports nutrition in our country.

IN ONE DOSE (1 CAPSULE) YOU WILL FIND:
  • 10 billion CFU

  • 12 probiotic strains

  • 175.4 mg GOS

  • 175.4 mg inulin

Looking at the ingredients, there is really nothing major to fault with Vilgain's probiotics. The manufacturer has made sure that each capsule contains 10 billion CFU, which is much more than most of the competition. At the same time, there are 12 different probiotic cultures enriched with two prebiotics (GOS and inulin) that support the effect of the probiotics. The resulting combination promises a premium effect, which is the most important thing about dietary supplements.

Final assessment:
A dietary supplement combining a first-class composition and a very competitive price always earns a positive evaluation from us. Vilgain Probiotics are certainly no exception. The package containing 90 daily doses comes out to a surprisingly low price considering the quality of the ingredients, which is definitely a big plus. Once again, we must also highlight here the presence of prebiotics, which automatically raise the quality of the product. We therefore have no choice but to highly recommend Vilgain probiotics.

4. Orangefit probiotica with digezyme

Orangefit probiotica with digezyme

The next place was taken by Probiotica with DigeZyme from Orangefit. In addition to a rich dose of probiotics, these contain digestive enzymes and a variety of natural extracts. All this at a very reasonable price.

Benefits:

  • Supercharged ingredients
  • Includes digestive enzymes
  • 13 probiotic strains
  • 5 billion CFU

Who makes it:

Dutch brand Orangefit is not well known in our country. It has been on the market since 2014, but is only now starting to reach us. This company is trying to offer really high quality products at the lowest possible price. From our experience, we can say that so far it is doing quite well.

IN ONE BATCH YOU WILL FIND:
  • 5 billion CFU
  • 13 probiotic strains
  • 50 mg of DigeZyme blend

Orangefit's Probiotica contains a really solid load of probiotics. But combined with that, it also contains a DigeZyme digestive enzyme blend that's proven tohas proven to be a top performer in our best digestive enzyme rankings. So it's clear that this combination is absolutely brilliant. For this reason, the composition of this product deserves high praise.

Final assessment:

I'm a big fan of smaller brands that can reliably compete with even much more well-known manufacturers. Orangefit has managed to do that in this case. Their Probiotica is an absolutely great supplement that deserves much more attention. I can highly recommend it to pretty much anyone. The combination of quality probiotics and digestive enzymes at a great price simply cannot be refused.

5. MedPharma Probio Imun

MedPharma Probio Imun

Probio Immune from MedPharma should not be missing in our ranking. Its biggest advantage is its great price (the lowest in the whole ranking) combined with a really high quality composition. The fact that one pack contains 67 doses is also a big attraction, so you don't have to worry about buying more for 2 months.

Benefits:

  • Unbeatable price
  • Up to 10 billion CFU
  • Contains vitamin C

Who makes it:

MedPharma is a Czech company operating on the market since 2000. It focuses on the promotion of human health, designing, developing, manufacturing, distributing and selling dietary supplements. In addition, the company also has a repertoire of cosmetic and medical products. You can find their products mainly in pharmacies, but gradually they are starting to appear in the offer of e-shops with sports nutrition.

IN ONE DOSE YOU WILL FIND:
  • 10 billion CFU
  • 6 probiotic strains
  • 20 mg of vitamin C

From a product with such a low price, I would certainly not expect its composition to be equal to much more expensive competitors. In one capsule of Probio Immune hides up to 10 billion CFU, which comfortably outperforms most other products. My only complaint in this regard is the presence of only 6 probiotic strains. Ideally, there should be at least 9 to ensure sufficient diversity. Finally, however, I must also praise the vitamin C content.

Final assessment:

MedPharma really surprised me very pleasantly in this case. The price is at the absolute minimum, but it retains a quality that can compete very effectively with much more expensive products. But it is true that if you are willing to pay extra for a really hyped product, MedPharma will not be interesting for you. Still, it deserves its positioning and I can highly recommend it to anyone for whom value for money is important.

6. Czech Virus Probio15

Czech Virus Probio15

The next place in our ranking belongs to PROBIO15 from Czech Virus. The strongest point of PROBIO15 is the content of up to 15 probiotic strains, which are also enriched with prebiotics. This makes them very comprehensive, which largely overshadows the fact that they contain relatively few CFUs.

Benefits:

  • Up to 15 probiotic strains
  • Contains prebiotics
  • High-quality ingredients

Disadvantages:

  • Higher price
  • Relatively few CFUs

Who makes them:

The Czech Virus brand is undoubtedly well known to every bodybuilding fan. They fine-tune their products to the last detail to meet the needs of even the most demanding strength athletes. The quality of the entire brand is also perfectly reflected in the fact that it cooperates with names such as Pavel Beran, Jirka Tkadlčík or Filip Grznár.

IN ONE DOSE YOU WILL FIND:
  • 300 million CFU
  • 15 probiotic strains
  • Inulin

PROBIO15 are one of the most complex probiotics, which naturally plays into their hands. Only Swanson has more than 15 active strains. There are also prebiotics, which enhance the effect of the probiotics. However, I am a bit disappointed by the relatively small number of CFUs. If there were a bit more, the probiotics from Czech Virus could be ranked much higher. Still, we have to praise the composition, because the complexity and great diversity of probioticof probiotic strains is in some ways more important than the number of CFUs.

Final assessment:

Taking into account all the pros and cons, I have to rate PROBIO15 very positively. I will highlight one last time the presence of 15 probiotic strains, which is an absolutely great number. However, this is also largely reflected in the price. PROBIO15 is one of the most expensive products in our ranking. The combination of high price and low CFU content may put many people off, which is probably not too surprising. But if you don't mind paying a little extra, you'll undoubtedly be satisfied.

7. Nutrend Multiherb

Nutrend Multiherb

The next position in our ranking was occupied by Multiherb from Nutrend. However, it is not a classic probiotic supplement. In fact, it contains a variety of added substances, which include mainly vitamins, minerals and various natural extracts. Unfortunately, all this is at the expense of the probiotics themselves, which Multiherb contains the least in our ranking.

Benefits:

  • Contains prebiotics
  • Contains vitamins and minerals
  • Proven LactoSpore brand

Disadvantages:

  • Low in probiotics
  • Higher price

Who makes them:

Nutrend certainly needs no introduction. The Czech brand has been in the sports nutrition market for over twenty-five years and currently exports its products to 60 countries around the world. In the Czech Republic, it has been one of the largest manufacturers of supplements for many years. Thanks to its quality, Nutrend has also been a partner of the Czech Olympic team in the past.

IN ONE SERVING (2 capsules) YOU WILL FIND:
  • 150 million CFU
  • 80 mg of vitamin C
  • Total of 24 mg of digestive enzymes

The name Multiherb itself suggests that we're dealing with a slightly different product here. It is not a pure probiotic, but a complex of digestive support substances. Of course, probiotics play a major role in it, but they are not found here to the same extent as in competing products. On the other hand, we must appreciate the presence of a large number of vitamins, minerals and prebiotics. In short, this is a pretty good mix of everything that is good for digestion. However, we cannot evaluate the whole composition in more depth, because we would need a separate article for that.

Final assessment:

Multiherb from Nutrend is a supplement that stands out among other probiotics. Its composition is a bit similar to SimpleBiotix, but we find less of the most important ingredient - probiotics. That's why we have to rank it lower. Nutrend's higher price does not play into its hands either. So who is Multiherb suitable for? For anyone who likes complex supplements that target multiple aspects at once. However, if you're looking for a probiotic-rich product that provides all the benefits associated with probiotics, you're more likely to choose elsewhere.

8. GreenFood Probiotika + Prebiotika

GreenFood Probiotika + Prebiotika

The ninth place was taken by Probiotics LactoSpore + Prebiotics from Greenfood. These contain a blend of probiotics under the registered brand LactoSpore, which claims to be more effective than other probiotics on the market. But the biggest attraction in this case will be the price.

Benefits:

  • Convenient price
  • Contains prebiotics
  • 1.3 billion CFU

Disadvantages:

  • Unknown number of probiotic strains

Who makes them:

"Quality, not quantity, that's our benchmark." That's GreenFood's motto. This Czech company, which has been on the market for over 25 years, focuses on producing the highest quality food and dietary supplements. All production takes place in the Czech Republic to ensure the highest possible quality of each product. All GreenFood products are also suitable for vegans.

IN ONE SERVING YOU WILL FIND:
  • 798 million-1.33 billion CFU
  • 133 mg LactoSpore
  • 300 mg of inulin

Sabinsa supplies its LactoSpore probiotic complex in three variants, each containing a different amount of CFUs. However, GreenFood does not specify which variant is included in their product. Therefore, in this case, we have to be satisfied that the CFU value of this product is somewhere between just under 800 million and 1.33 billion. A big plus is the presence of inulin. This polysaccharide has a prebiotic effect in the human body, so it helps to enhance the effect of probiotics.

Final assessment:

GreenFood is a quality product, but it is really challenging to evaluate. The manufacturer does not tell us how many colony forming units are found in one capsule, leaving us in quite a lot of uncertainty. 798 million CFU really isn't much, while 1.33 billion isn't a miracle, but it's very respectable. Even this uncertainty was reflected in GreenFood's final position in our rankings. The big advantage of this product, however, is its price, which could be much higher given its composition.

9. Prom-In Symbion Probiotic + D3

Prom-In Symbion Probiotic + D3

Synbion Probiotic + D3 from Prom-IN was ranked tenth in our ranking of the best probiotics. This is the latest in a line of really cheap probiotics. However, that doesn't mean it has nothing to offer customers. On the contrary - in addition to a solid dose of active colonies, it also contains vitamin D3 and inulin.

Benefits:

  • Great price
  • Contains vitamin D and inulin
  • Certified LactoSpore brand

Disadvantages:

  • Lower CFU content than competing products

Who makes it:

The Prom-IN brand is certainly well known to any sports enthusiast. It is a leading manufacturer of sports nutrition supplements in the Czech Republic, which The company is the leading manufacturer of dietary supplements in the Czech Republic and has gained the popularity of many athletes thanks to the perfect quality of its products. The flagship of the company is the CFM Evolution protein, which is now an absolute legend. But Prom-IN is not only about proteins. It offers quality BCAAs, vitamins and minerals, pre-workouts and a lot more.

IN ONE SERVING YOU WILL FIND:
  • 600 million-1 billion CFU
  • 100 mg of inulin
  • 25 μg of vitamin D3

Prom-IN is known for the excellent composition of its products and it did not disappoint today. The probiotics are enriched with the prebiotic inulin and vitamin D3, which together make a great combination. The only problem I see is the relatively low CFU content. Again, we don't know exactly how many are in LactoSpore, but even in the best case scenario, there will be no more than 1 billion. That's certainly not low, but most of the other products on this list have a lot more.

Final assessment:

Synbion Probiotic + D3 continues the trend of quality dietary supplements from Prom-IN, although it's not as big a hit today as it once was. The low CFU content is a beauty flaw that we can't just overlook compared to the really high quality competition. In other respects, however, there is nothing to criticize. Vitamin D3 and inulin work great as supplements and the overall feel of the product is really great. The low price is also appealing, which may be key for many people. Still, I think you can find better alternatives for a similar price.

10. Viridian Synerbio Daily

Viridian Synerbio Daily

Finally, we have Synerbio Daily from Viridian. It has a very high quality formula (as is Viridian's habit), but unfortunately it contains only 4 probiotic strains, which is really not enough. In other respects, however, it is the quality we are used to with this manufacturer - absolutely pure composition and containing only active ingredients.

Advantages:

  • Absolute purity of composition
  • 1.5 billion CFU
  • Excellent price/quality ratio

Disadvantages:

  • Contains only 4 probiotic strains

Who makes it:

British company Viridian takes great pride in being environmentally friendly, withViridian is very proud of the natural origin of its products and, above all, their premium quality. Zo means that all its products are 100% bioactive, the capsules used are of plant origin and contain no artificial substances. This strategy is really paying off for Viridian, because thanks to its quality it can enjoy more and more popularity on the European market

IN ONE DOSE YOU WILL FIND:
  • 1.5 billion CFU
  • 4 probiotic strains

Synerbio Daily contains no added substances, which is in line with how Viridian conceives its products. The 1.5 billion CFU content certainly doesn't offend, although it's true that some products offer much higher doses. But what spoils the whole product a bit is the content of only 4 probiotic strains. This is really low compared to the competition, which is why Viridian didn't rank higher.

Final assessment:

I personally really like Viridian's products. Their quality and transparency of the whole production process is absolutely amazing. This is of course reflected in our rating. In the comparison of digestive enzymes, for example, Viridian deservedly came out on top. Today, unfortunately, the result is not so good, although it still cannot be said that Synerbio Daily is not worth a try. It's just not the unrivalled quality we were kind of expecting. But Viridian products will always have their fans - 100% bioactive ingredients, an emphasis on being environmentally friendly and supporting charity make this product simply something more. But if we're talking about ingredients only, the probiotics from Now Foods or Swanson, for example, are a much better option from the top of our ranking.

What are probiotics?

Our bodies contain a surprisingly large number of living organisms. We need them for the proper functioning of our digestive tract and other areas of our body. The weight ofthese bacteria in our bodies can be up to one kilogram, which may sound almost unbelievable. But this number helps to put things into perspective. We may not even realize it, but there are about 500 different species of bacteria that are constantly taking care of our health and the proper functioning of our bodies. But some are more beneficial to us than others. If there is the right balance between them, everything works as it should. But the problem comes when this balance is upset. This can be caused by antibiotic treatment, an unhealthy lifestyle, the development of infections, drinking too much alcohol or stress, for example.

In such cases, it is necessary to balance this imbalance and add more beneficial bacteria to the body. These are the times when we need to either change our diet significantly or start using probiotic supplements. These come in many forms, but most commonly we come across capsules. For best effect, it is advisable to combine probiotics with prebiotics as well. Simply put, this is food for probiotics that our body cannot digest, so it reaches the intestines unchanged. There, the prebiotics are then fermented by the probiotics, allowing the probiotics to thrive properly. A typical example of a prebiotic is inulin, which is found in leeks, garlic, onions and chicory, for example.

Probiotics are important for our gut health
Probiotics are important for our gut health

What are the effects of probiotics?

Probiotics provide a variety of functions in our bodies. Since they are found in the intestines, it is already clear at first glance that they will play quite a crucial role in our digestion. They help the body to break down food and absorb necessary nutrients. Importantly, they maintain a stable pH level in the intestines, which again aids the proper functioning of the digestive system. A healthy and balanced microbiome is, among other things, crucial for the functioning of the immune system, which is an often overlooked effect of probiotics.

Why are lactobacilli and other microorganisms so important?

Lactic acid bacteria (lactobacilli) are characterized by the fact that they convert lactose into lactic acid in the intestines, which iseffectively preventing the spread of harmful bacteria that are unable to survive in an acidic environment. This process prevents inflammation and diarrhoea. Each strain has its own specific functions that help maintain balance in the intestines. This is why it is important to take the widest possible spectrum of probiotics, from the mostto the most abundant ones, such as lactobacilli or bifidobacteria, to the less abundant ones.

When and for what problems are they used?

As I mentioned above, there are several causes of imbalanced mycorbioma. There may be problems caused by taking various medications, poor diet or stress, for example. In women, a common problem that requires treatment with the help of probiotics is a yeast infection. Each of these problems is characterized by something different, but all of them are effectively helped by the use of probiotics.

During and after antibiotics

Everyone has certainly encountered antibiotics during their lifetime. They are used to treat bacterial infections, but unfortunately they have aor all bacteria that are sensitive to a particular antibiotic and come into contact with it. For this reason, it is recommended to take probiotics along with antibiotics, which can help toprevent, for example, the digestive problems that are often associated with antibiotics. They should be taken for the following two weeks after the end of treatment to ensure a better recovery of the microbiome.

Digestive disorders

Digestive problems afflict more people than may at first appear. Often they are caused by an overgrowth of a particular harmful bacteria. That is why it is strongly recommended to take probiotics even during these difficulties. This is especially true if, for example, you are travelling abroad, where you may encounter unusualwhich can wreak havoc on your digestive tract. Balancing the microbiome is key in such situations.

Other problems

There are countless situations in which probiotics are worth taking. Womenare advised to take them in the case of yeast infections, but they are also very effective as an immunity booster. If you feel that your immune system is not working as it should, you canit may be due to an imbalance in the gut microbiome. Probiotics can also be taken as a preventative measure. This is useful if you are starting to take medication, planning a significant change in diet, or simply just don't feel well.

Probiotics come in especially handy nowadays for their effect on immunity.
Probiotics come in particularly handy these days for their effect on immunity.

How long should probiotics be taken?

Looking for a dietary supplement that will solve your problems within the next day? Of course, there is no such thing and probiotics are no exception. You'll have to wait a while to see their positive effects. This time varies, of course, depending on your specific problem, your body and what probiotics you are taking. If you are suffering from really unpleasant problems, you may get at least partial relief in the followingHowever, it is usually recommended to wait at least a few weeks to two months. In the beginning, the doses taken should be higher and gradually reduced. After some time, only a maintenance dose is taken. However, the dosage varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, so read carefullyIf you are unsure, consult your doctor.

How to choose probiotics?

If you type "probiotics" into Google, a whole range of products will pop up, as is the case with everything today. But how do you choose the best ones? We've made your job a little easier with this ranking, but it never hurts to be able to paint your own picture. The key factors to look for when choosing a probiotic are the number of CFUs (Colony Forming Units), the number of probiotic strains present and the presence of prebiotics. In terms of CFUs, a good quality prebiotic should contain at least a billion of them. However, this is a very general guideline and needs to be applied in combination with other factors. For example, PROBIO15 from Czech Virus contains "only" 300 million CFUs, but it also contains 15 probiotic strains.

Thereshould be at least 9 active strains in probiotics, but the same caveat applies to this rule as the previous one. You always need to consider both variables and find a suitable compromise. The more CFUs, the more potent the probiotic, while a greater number of strains indicates greater complexity. Ideally, probiotics contain a combination of both, however this is not always the case. It is therefore up to you whether you need the most comprehensive supplement that restores as many probiotic strains as possible (for example, when takingtaking antibiotics), or you are trying to strengthen one particular group of bacteria, which is typically the case if you suffer from digestive problems.

Probio15 are a really great choice.
Probio15 are a really great choice.

Do probiotics have side effects?

It would be nonsensical to say that probiotics are cures for everything and you should therefore take as much of them as possible. The reality is that probiotics can cause some problems for some people. Most commonly, these are digestive problems. This is due to an imbalance of bacteria in the gut. In some cases these problems go away within a few days, in others they do not. In such a situation, it is of course advisable to stop taking probiotics. In rare cases, increased histamine levels or, for example, headaches may occur after taking probiotics. In the vast majority of cases, people do not suffer any problemsbut it's true that we're all different and we all have a slightly different microbiome. Therefore, as with all other supplements, you should listen to your body and respond adequately to its signals.
