Vitamin K has a number of really important functions in the human body. Yet it does not receive nearly as much attention as other vitamins or minerals. However, its deficiency can have adverse effects on bone quality, blood clotting and the risk of cardiovascular disease. If you don't want to deprive yourself of all the benefits this underrated vitamin has to offer, you should consider supplementing. In particular, vitamin K2 is not found in the normal diet in the amounts that might be considered ideal.
Don't know what to use to choose a quality vitamin K supplement? We have a solution for you! In our ranking you will find only the best products on the market, for which we have taken into account the price, quality, purity of the composition and, of course, the content of the active ingredient. Detailed analysis of the best K vitamins
The best performer in our ranking of the best K vitamins is Vitamin K2 + D3 from VitaHarmony. This product combines everything you would expect from a top vitamin K supplement: high content of the active ingredient, low price, pure formula and synergistic vitamin D3 content.
Benefits:
- Low price
- High-quality formula
- Also contains vitamin D3
- High dose of active ingredient
Disadvantages:
- Not suitable for vegans as it contains pork gelatin
About the manufacturer:
While the VitaHarmony brand is not one of the most popular sports nutrition manufacturers, its rootHowever, its roots go back to one of the oldest (if not the oldest) purely Czech multivitamins. CentralVita's thirty-ingredient multivitamin saw the light of day back in 1991. A few years later, the VitaHarmony brand was established. Its repertoire includes vitamins, minerals, plant extracts, probiotic cultures, herbal teas and much more. You may have already come across products from this manufacturer in our comparison of the best antioxidants or in our ranking of the best B vitamins.
In one dose (1 tablet) you will find:
- 100 mcg of vitamin K2
- 25 mcg of vitamin D3
Each tablet of VitaHarmony's Ducky contains 100 mcg of vitamin K2 and 25 mcg of vitamin D3, which is a great combination. Both vitamins are found here in ideal amounts, which promotes their synergistic effect. Therefore, there is nothing to complain about in terms of the content of the active ingredients. In addition, there is also olive oil, glycerol, water and porcine gelatine in the composition, which are responsible for keeping the contents of the tablets together. The downside is the aforementioned pork gelatin, which makes the product not suitable for vegans.
Final assessment:
VitaHarmony Vitamin K2 + D3 is a product with universal use. In short, everyone will appreciate it. It doesn't matter if you are trying to save money on supplements or if you are a really demanding customer. Either way, it will suit you because it combines premium quality with a very affordable price. Plus, one pack will last you a full two months, which is very good in my opinion. Ultimately, there really isn't anything to criticize about this vitamin, which is why we can highly recommend it.
MK-7 Vitamin K2 from Now Foods also performs very well in our ranking. Before we get into its rating, we must point out that you can come across several versions of vitamin K2 under the Now Foods brand. One of them is the MK-4 form of vitamin K, but we don't recommend taking it (for more information on the forms of vitamin K2, see the additional texts below the rankings). So always make sure you choose the correct version of the product when buying.
Benefits:
- High active ingredient content
- Convenient price
- High quality and pure composition
- One packet lasts up to 4 months
Disadvantages:
- Does not contain synergistic vitamin D3
About the Manufacturer:
Now Foods' roots date back to 1968. Since then, the company has strived to pass on the values associated with a healthy lifestyle through its products. The company's emphasis on premium quality is understandably a top priority. In addition to dietary supplements, the brand also produces beauty products, health foods and pet food. You may have come across Now Foods products in our ranking of the best probiotics or our comparison of the best vitamin E supplements.
In one serving (1 capsule) you will find:
100 mcg of vitamin K2
MK-7 Vitamin K2 from Now Foods contains important ingredient information already in its name. Vitamin K2 in the form of MK-7 is the best form that can be supplemented. In fact, unlike the MK-4 form, which is also widely available, it is released in the body in about one day. The MK-4 form, on the other hand, is released in just a few hours, which means that you need to take ithow many capsules a day to ensure sufficient vitamin K2 in the body. It is therefore no surprise that MK-7 is a much more effective option that any quality vitamin K2 supplement should contain.
Final assessment:
Vitamin K2 from Now Foods is another product that you won't go wrong with. The only negative is the absence of vitamin D3, but this is compensated by the very low price and especially the high vitamin K2 content. Unlike the previous product, it is also suitable for vegans because it does not contain gelatin. Moreover, one packet of this vitamin will last you up to 4 months, which is a really long time.
Vitamin K2 Natural from Swanson, like previous products, offers a truly quality product with a perfect composition at a very affordable price. Each of the 30 capsules in the pack contains 100 mcg of vitamin K2 in the form of MK-7, the best form that can be supplemented.
Benefits:
- High content of the active ingredient
- High quality composition
- Low price
- Vitamin K2 in MK-7 form
Disadvantages:
- Does not contain vitamin D3
About the Manufacturer:
Swanson Health Products began operations in 1969 in the United States. The founders set out to bring quality dietary supplements to the market to help people achieve a healthy lifestyle. In 2018, the company rebranded and has since then simply called itself Swanson. The company's repertoire now includes pet food and nutritional supplements. At MyFitnessio, you may have come across Swanson products in our comparison of the best vitamin D supplements or in our ranking of the best zinc supplements.
In one serving (1 capsule) you will find:
- 100 mcg of vitamin K2
In terms of the active ingredient content, we have absolutely nothing to complain about with Swanson Vitamin K2 Natural. We must also praise the MK-7 form of the vitamin, which is characterized by a longer release time.release time, which makes it an ideal choice for any proper supplement. Furthermore, the product contains some anti-caking agents or dyes, but these are always completely harmless substances that do not reduce the quality of the product in any way.
Final assessment:
If you're looking for a quality vitamin K2 at a bargain price, Swanson Vitamin K2 Natural is the one for you. In each daily dose, it contains the best form of vitamin K2 in a completely adequate amount. A big plus is also the quality composition, in which you will not find a single defective substance. It is true, however, that if you prefer products with a minimum of additives, you may be more comfortable with a vitamin from another brand. Ultimately, however, we cannot but highly recommend vitamin K2 from the Swanson brand to everyone.
The cheapest product in the whole ranking is Vitamin K2 MK-7 + D3 from MedPharma. Despite the very low price, it offers a really high quality composition and in addition to a sufficient dose of vitamin K, you will also find vitamin D3, which works synergistically with it. The resulting price/quality ratio is therefore really great.
Advantages:
- Very low price
- One pack lasts over 100 days
- Also contains vitamin D3
- High-quality ingredients
Disadvantages:
- Competing products contain vitamin K2 in higher amounts
About the Manufacturer:
MedPharma is a Czech company that has been in the sports nutrition supplements market since 2000. It focuses on promoting human health, designing, developing, manufacturing, distributing and selling its supplements. In addition, however, the company's repertoire also includes cosmetic and medical products. You can find their products mainly in pharmacies, but gradually they are starting to appear in the offer of e-shops with sports nutrition. You may have also come across them in our comparison of the best vitamin C supplements or in our ranking of the best magnesium supplements.
In one dose (1 tablet) you will find:
- 90 mcg of vitamin K2
- 25 mcg of vitamin D3
The combination of vitamins K2 and D3 provides a multitude of benefits, as these two vitamins support each other's positive effects. This synergistic effect is definitely a big plus and contributes to the overall quality of the product. We could have minor reservations about the vitamin K2 content, which is slightly lower than in competing products. In truth, however, it is not a bad thing, especially considering the presence of the aforementioned vitamin D3.
Final assessment:
MedPharma Vitamin K2 MK-7 + D3 offers a surprisingly high quality formula despite its very low price. One daily dose costs the least money of the whole ranking. As far as the price-quality ratio is concerned, there is really nothing to complain about. The mentioned smaller amount of vitamin K2 compensates for its synergistic effect with vitamin D3, so there is nothing to complain about in this respect either.
Super K from Life Extension is quite different from the rest of the products. In addition to vitamin K2 in the form of MK-7, it also contains MK-4 and vitamin K1. However, it should be noted that such a complex composition is not actually as beneficial as it may seem at first glance. However, this does not change the fact that this is an extremely high quality product.
Benefits:
- High dose of the active ingredient
- High quality and comprehensive formula
- No controversial substances
Disadvantages:
- High price
About the Manufacturer:
The Life Extension brand is part of Life Extension Europe, a company that focuses on manufacturing products that support a healthy lifestyle. Life Extension has been in business since the 1980s. During this time, the manufacturer has built a reputation as a reliable supplier of quality supplements. We have already shared our experience with Life Extension products in the ranking of the best antioxidants or in the comparison of the best collagens.
In one dose (1 capsule) you will find:
- 1,500 mcg of vitamin K1
- 1,000 mcg of vitamin K2 in the form of MK-4
- 100 mcg of vitamin K2 in the form of MK-7
- 10 mg of vitamin C
At first glance, it is obvious that Super K is really good in terms of vitamin K content. However, when we take a closer look at the ingredients, we find that it is actually not such a miracle. The reason is very simple. Vitamin K1 supplementation is unnecessary in the vast majority of cases, as this vitamin is abundantly and its deficiency is only digested by a narrow group of people with specific diseases. Also, the presence of vitamin K2 in the form of MK-4 is quite irrelevant. This form is only released in the body for a few hours, so it must be replenished several times a day. In a supplement that is dosed once a day, this substance is essentially useless. Especially if the product in question also contains a much more suitable form of MK-7, which can also be found in other products.
In simple terms, we could say that the only truly significant substance in Super K is vitaminK2 in the form of MK-7, which is present in the same quantity as in many other products in our ranking. As a result, Super K is not particularly different from the competition in terms of its potential effect.
Final assessment:
Super K from Life Extension is definitely not to be missed. It contains a high dose of vitamin K2 in the form of MK-7, which is most important. While the other forms of vitamin K are not particularly beneficial, they do not harm the product in any way. Their presence, however, means that the customer has to pay for them, even though he does not actually need them. The biggest disadvantage of Super K is therefore the high price, which will undoubtedly deter many people from buying it.
Vitamin K2VITAL® DELTA from GreenFood impresses especially with its patented form of vitamin K2, which is characterized by exceptionally good bioavailability and perfect stability. Equally important is the price of the product, which is much lower than usual among competitors. The only negative is the somewhat lower content of the active substance.
Advantages:
- Low price
- Patented form of vitamin K2
- High-quality formulation
Disadvantages:
- Lower active ingredient content
About the Manufacturer:
A family-owned Czech company operating in the sports nutrition market for over 25 years. This is how you could quickly describe the GreenFood brand. Among the company's main priorities is the production of quality supplements using premium natural ingredients. That's why you won't find preservatives, chemical dyes, stabilizers or added sugar in GreenFood products. You may have already come across GreenFood products in our ranking of the best chlorella products or in our comparison of the best digestive enzymes.
In one serving (1 capsule) you will find:
- 75 mcg of vitamin K2
K2VITAL® DELTA is a patented form of vitamin K2 from the Norwegian company Kappa Bioscience. It is an extremely stable vitamin K2 in the form of MK-7, whose main benefit is its double encapsulationthanks to which it remains stable even in the presence of minerals, next to which it otherwise degrades. In supplements containing only vitamin K2, this effect is logically impossible to show, but thanks to its extremely stability, K2VITAL® DELTA is released in the human body for up to 72 hours, which is a great benefit in terms of bioavailability.
Final evaluation:
Vitamin K2VITAL® DELTA will offer you all the health benefits you can expect from vitamin K2. In addition to the extremely stable form of the active ingredient, the surprisingly low price is a great advantage. The only disadvantage is the lower content of vitamin K2 itself, which is quite a pity. Otherwise, this product would have a chance to aspire to a much higher position in our ranking. However, it should be noted that even 75 mcg is not a disaster, although some competing products contain up to a third more.
Vitamin K2 MK-7 from Jarrow Formulas offers a fairly solid dose of vitamin K2 in the best possible form. However, its disadvantage is the relatively high price, which does not go hand in hand with the content of the active substance. Although the resulting price-quality ratio is a bit worse than the competition, it is still a very reliable supplement that will safely supplement your vitamin K2.
Benefits:
- High quality formula without unnecessary additives
- Vitamin K2 in the form of MK-7
- One packet lasts up to two months
Disadvantages:
- High price
About the Manufacturer:
"We're not your typical vitamin manufacturer." That's the slogan of the American company Jarrow Formulas. This company started its operations in 1977 and has come a long way since then. Jarrow L. Rogovin, the company's founder, has long since stopped delivering orders to customers' doors. Today, Jarrow Formulas is one of the respected manufacturers of sports supplements and during its time in the market, this brand has earned many awards.
In one serving (1 capsule) you will find:
- 90 mcg of vitamin K2
In one capsule of Vitamin K2 MK-7 from Jarrow Formulas we find 90 mcg of vitamin K2, of course in the form of MK-7. This is a sufficient amount, although many competing products contain a slightly higher dose. The active ingredient in the capsules is bound to MCT oil, which itself also provides a number of health benefits. As for the ingredients, the presence of soy, which is a common allergen, may be a problem for some. Otherwise, however, there are no potentially problematic ingredients.
Final assessment:
If I had to pick one negative of this product, it would undoubtedly be the price. In fact, Jarrow Vitamin K2 MK-7 is one of the most expensive products in the entire ranking. However, the high price is not justified in terms of the ingredients. Of course, we must appreciate the relatively high content of the active ingredient, but this is not unusual even for much cheaper products.
One more product from Life Extension found a place in our ranking. Specifically, it is Low Dose Vitamin K2, which, as the name suggests, contains vitamin K2 in small amounts. Specifically, it is 45 mcg in each capsule.
Benefits:
- Quality ingredients
- Suitable if you are looking for a supplement with a lower active ingredient content
- No unnecessary additives
Disadvantages:
- High price
In one dose (1 capsule) you will find:
- 45 mcg of vitamin K2
The first question one asks when looking at this product is probably obvious. Why would anyone want a supplement with low levels of the active ingredient? There are several answers. However, the main reason will usually be that the person does not want to take more vitamin K2 than is necessary. It is, after all, a fat-soluble vitamin, so excesses are not excreted by the body. Among other things, a lower dose means better digestibility, which can be crucial for some. But I'm certainly not saying that something like this will suit everyone. While in other products the low content of the active ingredient is considered a disadvantage, in this case it is presented more as a benefit.
Final assessment:
Life Extension Low Dose Vitamin K2 may seem strange, but it will certainly find its fans. Personally, however, I find it illogical to pay as much for a low vitamin K supplement as this product costs. It would make much more sense to choose a product with a higher content and dose it daily. The resulting cost per dose would be much lower and it would be essentially the same for the body.
Liposomal Vitamin K2 + D3 from Ekolife Natura differs from its competitors mainly in its form. It is neither a capsule nor a tablet, but a liquid solution. In terms of price/quality ratio, however, it looks a bit weak next to other products, as it combines a low content of the active substance and a high price.
Advantages:
- High-quality composition
- Easy dosing
- Also contains vitamin D3
Disadvantages:
- High price
About the Manufacturer:
The Slovenian brand Ekolife Natura is primarily engaged in the sale of liposomal vitamins and similar products. The company was founded by two sisters who wanted to use their products to help people achieve a healthier lifestyle. The main priority in the production of all supplements is always quality. It is therefore clear that all Ekolife Natura products are made from premium ingredients. You may have come across them in our comparison of the best collagens or in our ranking of the best supplements with chlorella.
In one dose (1 ml) you will find:
- 45 mcg of vitamin K2
- 25 mcg of vitamin D3
I've written several times about the benefits of the synergistic combination of vitamins K2 and D3. The only disadvantage is the rather low content of the active ingredient, which adversely affects the final effect. This is a quite unusual form of vitamin, but for some it can be a great benefit. Instead of swallowing tablets, just take 1 ml of the vitamin either alone directly into the mouth or in combination with water or perhaps juice. The dosage is therefore very simple and will suit even people who do not like tablets or capsules.
Final assessment:
Ekolife Natura Liposomal Vitamin K2 + D3 will definitely not overwhelm you with the content of the active ingredient or the price. Its advantage lies in its difference from the rest of the competition. Personally, I don't think this factor plays a role for any significant percentage of people, but if you do prefer supplements in liquid form for some reason, this product is for you. However, if you're looking for a vitamin K2 with the best possible value for money, you'll probably be happywith one of the products at the top of our rankings.
At the bottom of our ranking of the best K vitamins is Vitamin K2 from Viridian. It impressed us because of its high quality and very pure composition, but because of its lowits low active ingredient content and very high price, it couldn't make the top spot.
Benefits:
- High quality and pure formula
- Contains vitamin K2 in the form of MK-7
- Suitable for vegans
Disadvantages:
- Very high price
- Low content of the active ingredient
About the manufacturer:
The British company Viridian Nutrition specializes in the production of so-called ethical vitamins. All products of this manufacturer are 100% bioactive and do not contain genetically modified substances. In addition, they are stored in capsules of plant origin without the use of any additives. The company prides itself on the purity of its products, environmental friendliness and helping charity. You may have already come across the Viridian brand in our comparison of the best digestive enzymes or in our ranking of the best nootropics.
In one serving (1 capsule) you will find:
- 50 mcg of vitamin K2
The active ingredient content is definitely not the advantage of Viridian's vitamin K2. There are only 50 mcg of the active ingredient in each capsule, which is really low considering the very high price. The manufacturer recommends taking one to two capsules a day, which together can make 100 mcg, as it is commonlyThe price for one daily dose would be doubled in that case. But not to be merely critical, we must commend the use of a vegetable capsule and the absence of any fillers and unnecessary additives.
Final assessment:
Viridian Vitamin K2 is admittedly a very pure product with a really high quality composition, the combination of the low content of the activeHowever, the low level of active ingredient and the really high price makes it a product that does not have much potential to compete with other manufacturers. However, if you are a fan of this brand and natural ingredients are important to you, you will probably be happy with the product.
What is vitamin K?
When you say "vitamin", vitamin K is probably not the first thing that comes to mind. Compared to vitamin C, B-complex or vitamin D, K is quite neglected. But that in no way means this vitamin is somehow inferior or that it doesn't deserve any attention. Many people even believe thatvitamin K plays an absolutely vital role in the human body and that it has aa long way to go to fully understand how crucial this vitamin really is to our lives. However, regardless of all the speculation, we can now say with certainty that vitamin K should not be takento be taken lightly, as it has a number of extremely important functions in the human body. Before we get to these, we must first say a little more about vitamin K.
As is common among vitamins, the term vitamin K covers several substances. More precisely, there are three different forms of vitamin K: vitamin K1 (phylloquinone), vitamin K2 (menaquinone) and vitamin K3 (menadione), which is irrelevant to us because it is a synthetic form that must not be administered to humans. Although all three substances share an almost identical name, their functions in the human body are quite differentand there are even opinions that K1 and K2 should be self-designated vitamins.
Effects of vitamin K in the human body
Since vitamin K1 and K2 have quite different functions in the human body, it is necessary to discuss their effects separately. Vitamin K1 is important primarily because of its effect on blood clotting (theThe name vitamin K comes from the German "coagulation"). A deficiency is associated with problematic blood clotting, while an excess can lead to an increased risk of blood clots.
Vitamin K2, on the other hand, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, but above all it supports bone health and development. Vitamin K activates the protein osteocalcin. This ensures that calcium from the blood vessels, where it can cause greaterand cardiovascular disease, to the bones, where its presence is desirable. As a result, vitamin K2 also helps to prevent the aforementioned cardiovascular diseases. At the same time, there is speculation about the positive effect of vitamin K2 on dental health, and there is also talk about its ability to alleviate the symptoms of liver cancer.
What is the difference between water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins?
Before we go any further, it is necessary to make a small detour. You've probably heard that vitamins are classified according to whether they are fat-soluble or water-soluble. This division is quite fundamental and determines many of the important properties of each vitamin. Vitamins K are classified as a group of vitamins that are fat soluble. In practice, this means that the human body cannot excrete them, but stores them in fat stores. For this reason, fat-soluble vitamins are usually present in the human body in sufficient quantities. However, for some reason the body cannot store vitamin K in large quantities. Therefore, it depends on its regular daily intake. It is probably for this reason that the human body is able to partially recycle vitamin K in the so-called vitamin K cycle.
Which form of vitamin K is best to supplement?
There are several factors to look out for when choosing a vitamin K supplement. The most important is the form of the vitamin itself. Vitamin K3 may as well be discarded as it is not suitable for humans. So is it better to supplement with vitamin K1 or K2? Or perhaps both at the same time? In terms of absorption and bioavailability, it is definitely preferable to supplement vitamin K2. There are two reasons. Vitamin K1 is much easier to take in the normal diet because it is found in leafy vegetables. Its deficiency is therefore quite rare. More importantly, however, is the fact that the human body will only use 10-15% of vitamin K1 taken in the form of supplements. Vitamin K2, on the other hand, is biologically utilized 95-100% of the supplemented dose. And unlike K1, it is also less abundant in the natural diet. In addition, there have recently been doubts about how much vitamin K2 the bacteria in the colon are able to synthesize.m intestine, which was thought to be the source of at least 50% of the required amount of this vitamin.
We can therefore summarise it as follows. It is not worth supplementing vitamin K1 because we have enough of it and our body cannot use it properly anyway. On the other hand, the amount of vitamin K2 raises doubts about its daily intake and it is believed that we have much less of it than has long been assumed. It is fair to say, however, that we simply do not yet have enough scientific studies in this regard.
Vitamin K2 isn't just one either
If you found the division of vitamin K into 3 different types unnecessarily complicated, I have bad news for you. Vitamin K2 is subdivided into several subtypes differing inin the structure of the molecule (more specifically, the number of isoprene units in the side chain). And while this division may not seem very important to somethere are some really important differences between the different subtypes of vitamin K2 that you need to know. In dietary supplements, you'll most often see MK-4 and MK-7 subtypes. The two subtypes differ primarily in how long their elimination half-life is. The longer the chain of the vitamin, the longer its elimination half-life. What does this mean for us? While the MK-4 subtype has a half-life of just a few hours, MK-7 is excreted by the body for much longer.
How does this finding translate into supplementation? The MK-4 subtype is essentially ineffective as it should be supplemented every few hours due to its short half-life. In contrast, MK-7 works very well in dietary supplements and effectively increases the amount of vitamin K2 in the body, which incidentally has been confirmed by scientific studies. It is therefore clear that when choosing a supplement, one should always choose one with the MK-7 subtype.
Where can I find vitamin K? Sources of vitamin K
Foods rich in vitamin K1 include leafy vegetables. It can be found mainly in kale, spinach, leaf lettuce, but also in a significant amountIt is also found in broccoli, watercress and some vegetable oils. Of these, olive, soya and rapeseed oils are particularly noteworthy.
Vitamin K2 is present primarily in animal fats - butter, lard, cream. It is also found in good quality meat and eggs. Soya beans are also a rich source of vitamin K2, but they are not very common in our country. As mentioned above, the human body can synthesize vitamin K2 into vitamin K1, but this process is less efficient than expected. For this reason, in combination with the low vitamin K2 content in the normal diet, it is advisable to supplement vitamin K2.
How much vitamin K2 to take daily?
Unlike most vitamins, there is no precise limit for vitamin K2 that determines the recommended daily dose. However, the most common recommendation is to take about 120 µg of vitamin K per day. The problem is that there is usually no distinction between vitamin K1 and K2. Therefore, it can be assumed that the intake of vitamin K2 alone may be a littlebecause there is plenty of vitamin K1 in the normal diet. Most supplements contain K2 in amounts up to 100 µg, which I think is quite ideal. In this context, it should also be noted that there is no upper recommended limit for vitamin K intake per day. In this respect, it is therefore advisable to use common sense and not to exceed the dosage unnecessarily.
For best effect, it is advisable to supplement vitamin K2 together with vitamin D3, as they work synergistically. Our ranking of the best vitamin D supplements, in which we have detailed everything, will help you choose.
